Common names are Endive, Escarolle (Eng.); Chicore Frisde (Fr.); Escarola (Sp.); Krause Winter Endivie (Ger.); Krulandijvie (Neth.).

Cultivars are in India.

The Middle East, later spreading to Egypt by 4500 BC, Greece and many parts of the Mediterranean before being introduced to China by the seventh century AD. A recent introduction to the tropics. Possibly derived from L. serriola L. which is indigenous to western Asia.

Endive was cultivated in Egypt over 2000 years ago and was distributed from there throughout Europe and Asia. It is now cultivated in the Caribbean area, the Philippines, Central and West Africa.

An annual glabrous herb. Roots: main taproot, with fibrous lateral branches. Stems: cylindrical, containing latex vessels, up to 10 cm in most cultivars but extended to 1 m in L. sativa var. asparagina. Leaves: almost sessile, arranged spirally in rosettes, variable in size and form, 10-25 cm in length. Flowers: pentamerous, yellow, in dense clusters, ligulate and hermaphrodite. anthers connate; stigma bifid. Seeds: achenes, oval, 34 mm in length, ribbed, hairy at one end, white, yellow, grey or brown, pappus of silky hairs; approximately 100 seeds/g.

The crop is tolerant of a wide range of soil conditions but well drained soils with a satisfactory organic content and adequate mineral reserves are most suitable. Reduced yields are obtained from crops grown on heavy clay soils. High temperatures, above 27C, are likely to induce low yields. The water requirements of the crop are not high, but rainfall levels of more than 1500 mm per year are likely to reduce growth and possibly cause rotting of the tubers. Tuber yield is reduced when crops are grown at low elevations and altitudes of more than 500 m are generally required for the production of satisfactory yields. Crops are grown in India at elevations up to 3600 m. Short days appear to promote tuber initiation and development; some forms may show tuber dormancy for periods of up to 150 days.

Propagation is from seed which germinates in 4-5 days from sowing. May be sown in drills 25-30 cm apart and seedlings initially thinned to 8-10 cm, later to 20-25 cm apart in the row. Approximately 0.75 kg of seed is required per hectare to give a planting density of 200 000 plants/ha. Lettuce is more frequently sown in containers or a seed bed and transplanted when 4-6 weeks old. In some areas, a black polythene mulch is used to reduce water evaporation from the soil surface. Irrigation: This is required at frequent intervals, particularly at transplanting and until the seedlings are established. Dry conditions are likely to induce premature flowering. Nutrient requirements: A good response is obtained to a high soil organic content and to top dressings of nitrogenous fertilizers. Phosphatic fertilizers encourage the production of firm heads. Tipburn in heading types of lettuce appears to result from an imbalance in the soil/plant/water system which may also be linked with temperature variation and nitrogen status of the plant. Some cultivars are resistant to this disorder.

Tubers normally mature within 80-150 days from planting; maturity period varies with cultivar. Removal of the flowering heads in the bud stage will encourage tuber development; the stems are normally cut and removed before the tubers are lifted. Yield: Indian yields in the range of 12-25 t/ha are normal, but yields of 30-40 t/ha have been recorded. Seed production: Seeds are readily formed but are rarely required since tubers are mainly used in propagation.

Once they have been harvested, the tubers rapidly shrink and deteriorate if kept at ambient temperatures, but if they are sound and disease-free, they may be successfully stored for periods from 90 to 150 days at 0C in a relative humidity of 90-95% although a significant loss, due to decay and shriveling of tubers, may occur.

The tubers are eaten as a cooked vegetable, being often added to soups and stews; they may also be pickled.

A number of the reed-type epidendrums also readily produce adventitious growth from along the older stems and at the ends of the extending flower spikes. Leave these until they have grown a good root system, which they do extremely quickly, then carefully remove them from the main stem by cutting them off with a pruning knife. Pot them up and grow them on in the usual way.

Phalaenopsis occasionally produce keikis or adventitious growths from the old flowering stems. This is frequently seen with the species Phalaenopsis lueddemanniana and related species or hybrids. If you want to encourage new growth in this way, you can treat the flowering stems with keiki paste - a growth hormone enhancement that is available from some specialist nurseries or orchid sundry firms. First remove the small green bract that protects each node along the stem, then apply the paste.

Paphiopedilums and Phragmipediums Sympodial orchids that do not produce pseudobulbs, mainly the paphiopedilums and phragmipediums, can be propagated from a back portion of growth, which is removed at repotting time in the same way as the old pseudobulbs are removed. This should only be attempted when a plant is large enough and is carrying in excess of four strong growths, otherwise it will reduce the strength of the main plant. Most of the phragmipediums are robust growers that are more easily propagated than many of the hybrid paphiopedilums, which can be slow growing, with the older growths dying before there is an opportunity to build up a very large plant.

Cattleyas are sympodial orchids that are also treated slightly differently. The creeping rhizome is much thicker than that of other orchids and is visible on the surface of the compost with the pseudobulbs spaced along it. Most cattleyas have two growing seasons in any year, producing new growth and roots in the autumn as well as in the spring. This makes it possible to start propagation during the autumn by severing the plant, which remains in its pot.

The plant that has become extremely lit with a length of bare stem at the base srd strong aerial roots along its length, be cut down by severing the rhizome at a point below the leaves and aerial roots. The leafless stump that is left in the pot will, in time, produce a new growth that can be grown on.

Dendrobiums are sympodial orchids, many of which grow tall, thin canes that will readily produce keikis or adventitious new growths along their length. This is particularly true of Dendrobium nobile and its hybrids. These growths occur most often as a result of poor cultivation. If the plants are watered too early in the season after the winter's rest, at a time when the flower buds should be developing, these flower buds turn into growths. If you were expecting flowers, this can be an annoying and disappointing habit.

However, if you want to produce new plants from one favourite specimen, try cutting off a plump, leafless pseudobulb that has not flowered and dividing this into segments, cutting between the nodes or growing points to produce several pieces, each with one joint at the middle. Dust the cut ends with sulphur or powdered charcoal to prevent rot, and place in a community pot with one end pushed into the compost (growing medium). Most of these will produce a new growth that can be grown on to make a further flowering plant within a few years.

You will need to check beneath the sphagnum moss regularly in order to see whether there are any roots growing. As soon as the roots appear, remove the moss covering and spray the roots regularly until they have grown several inches. The plant can then be severed and the top portion potted up and grown on into a new plant.

How to Grow Grapes

After planting the vine is allowed to grow naturally for two seasons. One should then find that two quite long rods have been produced, together with some side growths or laterals. In January the laterals are cut back to within one bud of their base, while the smaller of the two canes is cut back to within two buds of its base.

Therefore, with the ordinary outdoor varieties, all one has to do is to make sure that the soil doesn't lack in moisture and humus, and once again we gladly accept the straw mulching system as advised for blackcurrants and gooseberries. Clean straw, free from such weeds as clocks and thistles, is put down all over the ground where the vines are growing, to the depth of about 8 inches when trodden down.

The object now is to let this cane produce young laterals on which the fruit will be borne. These laterals will be tied to the wires provided and will be pruned in the summer once a month or so to keep them under control. This is usually known as stopping.

Meanwhile a strong growth will be developing froth the base of the vine rod that was cut back hard in January. This should be allowed to grow upright and should be tied to the stake or wires. Any side growths that develop will be pruned back to one leaf, and if any flower trusses are seen, these will be pinched up.

The following January the cane that has borne the fruit in the summer will be pruned, back to within an inch of its base, while the other cane that was trained upwards will be curved round to take the place of the one which was cut back. Thus year after year you ensure replacement of strong young wood, plus heavy cropping.

By then some of the elaborated sap may have been passed up to the wood and so some energy may be lost, but it can't be helped. Winter pruning on the whole should be hard, much harder, in fact, than in the case of every other fruit.

When an otherwise large and healthy int fails to bloom in the appropriate season, the causes can only be light and temperature. There is no such thing as an orchid that will not flower. Given the right environment, it will produce blooms, because it is the most natural thing for the plant to reproduce itself. One that is growing too well and is extremely healthy can be lazy and sometimes fail to flower. In natural conditions, some plants get too much light and are badly scorched but still produce an abundance of flowers.

Often, there can be one place in the home or greenhouse where a single specimen plant can be accommodated in solitary splendor, on a side table in a light corner or a special place in the conservatory or living room.

Often it is easier to find space indoors than in the greenhouse, where the temptation is always to cram a few more plants in, which is not always the best idea. Growing to specimen size is not always possible, however, with large growing orchids such as cymbidiums.

Certain orchids, among them miniature coelogynes, such Coelogyne fimbriata, and bulbophyllums, including Bulbophyllum can be contained in their original for several years, even though they produce numerous new growths. 1 trick here is to peg down the growths within the confines of they as they grow, carefully pushing them down in between or on top of existing pseudo bulbs.

L'Arcure Method of Apple Training

A Belgian system of apple training which was introduced into Great Britain and which has been demonstrated at the East Mailing Research Station is known as L'Arcure System. It is really a kind of cordon system of apple growing with the trees trained in a semicircular method.

By means of the arching, the trees are brought into fruiting early, and by means of the training we get the maximum branch coverage in the minimum of space.

Oblique Cordons can be vertical also, of course.] They are bought budded or grafted on to the M.IX stock and care being taken when planting to keep the union of the scion 3 inches above ground level.

During the summer all laterals that develop are pruned back to within an11-, inch of their base the moment they reach a 9-inch length, with the exception of the lateral in the centre of the arched tree. This lateral is then trained in the opposite direction to form a second half-moon or curve, it once again being tied to a wire stretched 3 feet curved in the opposite direction. Thus half-curve after half-curve, the tree rises to a height, say, of 8 feet. treated as was the first one and eventually the central lateral is again above soil level. The following year this second curved branch is The trees themselves are planted 3 feet apart in the rows with the rows 5 feet apart.

Belle De Boskoop is a heavy cropper, fruit round, yellowish skin through grey-russet, slightly scarlet flush. When peeled smells aromatic. Season Oct.-Mar. Resistant to scab.

Blenheim Orangs is a delicious apple that unfortunately takes years to come into cropping unless worked on M.IX stock. Fruits large, skin dull yellow with slight flush on one side, has lovely nutty flavour. Season Nov.-Dec. Susceptible to scab but resistant to mildew. Bowden's Seedling is probably a seedling from Jonathan and is in fact very much like it, but of better quality. A tall oval apple, pale yellow skin, covered with a scarlet flush, makes the apple almost red. Season Nov.-Dec. Resistant to scab, but very susceptible to mildew.

Growing Miniature Orchids

In temperate regions of the world, orchids that are normally grown indoors or under glass can be placed outside for the summer growing season. A carefully chosen position will provide your plants with conditions that are nearer to those of their natural habitat.

Orchids that benefit most are lightloving, cool-growing types such as cymbidiums, odontoglossums, coelogynes, encvclias and dendrobiums, all of which have fairly robust foliage that may become a little spotted or marked throughout the course of several months but will not come to any harm. Those orchids with softer, wideleafed foliage, such as lycastes, anguloas and the deciduous calanthes, would very soon become notably spoiled by blemishes as a result of the effects of the weather.

Place pebbles or expanded clay pellets in the base to create your own individual tank effect. You now have a miniature orchid garden to house those tiny plants that would otherwise dry out too rapidly. Place this in a bright spot, but not too close to a window where it may overheat. It is a good idea to place a minimum/maximum thermometer inside the aquarium to assess the temperature range you have created.

To make the most of your blooms, stand a plant where it will create the greatest impact, but remember that you will need to water the plant in the usual way.

If you do not stand the plant on a damp base, you will need to remove it for watering and replace it after the pot has drained. The flowers of some orchids can also be highly scented, which adds immeasurably to their overall appeal.

Alternatively, you can build your own indoor growing case as large as conveniently possible and with the inclusion of electric lighting. This will provide a permanent home for those plants that do not need bright light. These include the phalaenopsis and paphiopedilums.

It blooms during the autumn and is highly fragrant at night. Well-chosen colour combinations can create beautiful effects, as is shown by this display of pale pink Phalaenopsis schilleriana and the deep pink P. Mad Milva. Orchids can be displayed in most rooms in the house.

Orchids that have outgrown their pots are also at risk of being top-heavy and are easily knocked over and damaged. These same orchids are also extremely difficult to keep watered, and once they have become dry it is almost impossible to get water down to the roots without a long soak in a bucket of water. Other orchids better left where they are include those that are producing their flowers during the summer period. Developing buds and flowers are the first to suffer from dampness, rain and wind. It also becomes difficult to keep the buds free of aphids and attacks from slugs. Newly repotted orchids should not be taken outside until they haw started to make their new root systems.

The fertilized egg cell develops into an embryo which, with certain reserve tissues, forms the seed which is enclosed in a protective covering called the seed coat.

Simultaneously, however, there are great losses both of the seeds and the young plants. Large quantities of seeds are eaten by birds and animals and many fall in places unsuitable for growth where they either do not germinate at all or die shortly after germinating, having used up the store of food in the seed. Similarly, many young trees are destroyed in their first years by drought, frost, invading grass or other plants, or by animals that feed on them. Of the huge crop of seeds, all that usually remains within a few years is less than one per cent per hectare.

In most conifers the seeds are contained in a cone consisting of carpels attached to a central axis that becomes woody.

The fruits of broad-leaved trees are classified as true fruits if their origin is a single ovary, or accessory fruits if other parts of the flower are involved, or if their origin is the entire inflorescence (mulberry).

Birch and pine, the first pioneers, were followed by the rapid northward spread of the oak and hazel, whose heavy seeds fall only a few metres from the parent Fee. Acorns, however, are a favourite food of jays and pigeons, while hazelnuts are eaten by nutcrackers and woodpeckers and e sometimes carried great distances in their beaks.

Naturally, it would drop to the ground while being carried; and thus the offipring of a given tree might take root several hundred kilometres from the parent. In this way even these trees migrated hundreds of kilometres to the north within Itirly short space of time.

Apricot Growing Tips

For apricots there must be some shelter from cold winds. There must be protection from the spring frosts, and there must be sufficient depths to the soil. Some people say that the spring frosts not only kill the blossom but damage the young wood and so start the die- back.

The aphides which canse the leaves to curl and the young shoots to be twisted may be prevented by spraying with a tar-oil wash in December, or by soaking with liquid derris when they are first seen.

Red. spider, which causes the leaves to turn to an autumnal shade, can be controlled if the undersides of the leaves are sprayed with liquid derris. I am told that silver leaf has given trouble but I have never seen it damage apricots.

Because of the danger of die-back, most experts try and do the pruning entirely in the summer. They aim at removing the unnecessary side shoots when they are 1 inch or so long with their thumb-nail. Growths, therefore, that are tending to grow away from the wall are pinched or rubbed out early. The remaining shoots should be pruned similarly to peaches.

There is little doubt that it pays to protect the blossom when it is out with sacking or fish-netting. It is usual, also, to titillate the blossoms with a rabbit's tail on the end of a bamboo, or a long camel hair brush, the idea being to the pollen artificially. If you are lucky enough to get a heavy crop, thin the fruits to 6 inches apart when they are as big as acorns. The apricots should be at least 4 inches away from one another.

I have never dared to sow the soil down to grass but I have mulched the ground where apricots are growing with sedge peat an inch deep in June, because apricots can suffer in dry weather. Though liberal watering in a drought I prefer the simple mulching system.

Goat Willow and Walnut Tree

The black walnut is a native of eastern North America, where it grows alongside large rivers as far north as the 'Canadian border. It is a large tree attaining heights of 30 to 40 metres. Under forest competition it develops a tall, clear bole; the open-growri form has a short bole and broad crown. The bark is grey-black and deeply furrowed.

The white willow is found mainly in lowland woods alongside rivers where, together with poplars and alders, it grows on sites with a high water table. It stands up well to prolonged spring floods. Its range of distribution embraces most of Europe, eastwards to western Asia and southwards to North Africa, mainly in the valleys of large rivers. It is a light-demanding tree, resistant to frost, and does well even in heavy and acidic soils. It is marked by the vigorous production of stump sprouts. In practice, it is propagated mainly by cuttings which root readily.

It provides bees with their first feast of the year. The seed ripens and is shed in May. At the base of the leaf stalk are small semiheart-shaped leaf-like bodies (stipules) which soon fall. This tree is propagated, both in the wild and artificially, by seed, as cuttings root very poorly. It is a frost-resistant species that thrives in poorer and drier soils. The goat willow is an important pioneer tree in forestry, and animals are fond of nibbling its bark.

The butternut is indigenous to North America, growing in the eastern part from the 35th parallel northwards to Canada. It occurs in mixed, broad- leaved woods, alongside rivers and in hill country, on deep, fertile soils, attaining heights of up to 30 metres. The bark is grey, divided by shallower fissures than those of the black walnut. The twigs and buds are grey, sticky-pubescent, and the pith of the twigs contains air spaces.

Often growing alongside brooks near villages are the so-called pollarded willows, the result of cutting-back the trunk and of repeated cutting of the branches over a period of 2 to 5 years. In practice, new individuals are propagated by cuttings.

The tree is cultivated in gardens and avenues for its fruit - nuts - which it begins to bear from about its tenth year. The green husks split in September and October to release the nuts, whose oily kernel is very tasty and nourishing. The high quality wood (the heartwood is brownish, the sapwood greyish) is used to make furniture.

The shape and the structure of the leaves of conifers, called needles, are different. They are narrow, elongate and either rhomboid, semi-circular or elliptical in cross-section in order to limit transpiration as much as possible.

In most woody plants the leaf venation is netted, with a single primary vein and several secondary veins branching off at intervals.

The primary vein divides the blade into two, generally equal, halves. In some woody plants, however, the halves are not identical, especially at the base, and these are termed asymmetric (elm, hackberry). In other species the leaf may have several veins branching out from the base (maples); such leaves are usually palmately lobed.

Most European broad-leaved trees are deciduous, in other words, they shed their leaves in the autumn. Only in southern, and in temperate parts of western Europe do some trees retain their leaves throughout the winter, e.g. the common holly, the laurel and the box. In the autumn the organic substances produced by the leaves are concentrated in the body of the tree and the leaves begin to change colour as a result of the decomposition of the chlorophyll and growing predominance of the red and yellow carotenoid pigments, along with the increase of anthocyanin in the cellular sap.

This autumnal coloration is characteristic of many species of trees, e.g. the leaves of poplar, birch and common ash turn yellow, the beech turns orange-brown, the red oak and wild service tree turn dull red and the staghorn sumach red or yellow-red. A corky layer forms between the leaf stalk and the twig, severing the connecting tissues.

The leaf then falls to the ground, giving back to the soil a substantial part of the minerals taken from it. The shedding of leaves is the result of the climate, in these latitudes, where in winter trees other than evergreens limit their life processes to the minimum, eliminating the water in their tissues in order to withstand better the harsh weather of the cold months.

Red Oak and Wych Elm

The smooth-leaved elm is a more warmth-loving species than the wych elm and is found in Europe only as far north as the Baltic Sea. It grows mainly in the lowlands on alluvial deposits in mixed woods, together with oak, alder and poplar. It reaches a height of 30 metres, and may attain an age of several hundred years, growing a thick trunk. The globular flower buds can alr,ady be distinguished in winter.

The flowers appear in February and March and the fruits - orbicular- winged samaras with a single seed - mature at the end of May. The leaves are ovate, opposite, broadest in the mid-section and wi th.a more or less unequal base. The root system is heart-shaped with numerous, flat lateral roots.

The smooth-leaved elm is marked by a vigorous production of stump suckers, and, sometimes, root suckers. It requires rich, moist soil. Found in drier situations is the form Ulmus cartinifolia suberosa that has corky winged plates on the branchlets. In the past several decades, the smooth-leaved elm has been greatly decimated by the Dutch elm disease, a disease caused by a fungus that causes wilting of the foliage and drying out of branches, and makes its further planting a controversial problem.

The European white elm grows mainly in central and eastern Europe, extending west only as far as western France and not reaching Britain. It is most plentiful in lowlands on alluvial deposits, and occurs only., up to heights of about 500 metres. It tolerates greater moisture than any other elm, and is not harmed even by passing floods. For that reason, it is often found on the banks of rivers, in the company of alder, poplar and willow. It is rarely found in dry situations, where it has a very brief life span.

The European white elm reaches a height of 20 to 30 metres, and is distinguished by plentiful trunk suckers. The bark is scaly, and shallowly furrowed. The buds are sharply pointed with two-toned brown scales edged with a paler hue. The flowers appear about two weeks later than those of the wych elm and are similarly borne on stalks 2 centimetres long. The ovate leaves have 14 to 20 pairs of secondary veins. Of all the European elms this species has the greatest resistance to fungus disease.

They are usually smaller, and lack the longitudinal stripes when freshly shed. The durmast oak does not begin bearing fruit until a fairly advanced age, about 40 to 60 years. It grows in mixed stands with the hornbeam and beech, in poorer and more acidic soils together with the pine and birch, and on dry, warm slopes in the company of the service tree, common or field maple, and other sun-loving woody plants. The wood is of similar quality, and has the same uses, as that of the common oak.

Growing Orchids Outdoors

In countries with a temperate climate, it is safe to place those orchids that will benefit from the air outside in their pots by the end of late spring or the beginning of early summer.

By the time the cymbidiums are ready to be returned to their winter quarters, they will be bristling with flower spikes. The Odontoglossum types, in particular, will reflect their change of surroundings and the extra light by the reddening of their leaves. Provided the amount of light they receive is not overdone, and they are not exposed to bright sunlight, this reddening will do no harm; it can be likened to a suntan and is not sunburn. During the following winter, these leaves will regain their midgreen coloring.

Any plant that immediately loses a iot of leaves may not be well suited to lurdoor culture and would be better off back inside. Otherwise, expect lecne leaf-loss as the plants adjust to luta new environment.

Some need a lower temperature at night if they are to bloom, and may need to be brought indoors at night, where air conditioning maintains a lower temperature.

Before bringing the plants back inside, check for pests. Out-of-doors they can harbour insects, such as earwigs and woodlice, which will be out of sight beneath the leaf-bracts and will need to be searched out.

Check the compost (growing medium) for ants' nests and vine weevils or their grubs. Destroy these by soaking the plant in a bucket of water for up to an hour. Check for the more easily seen pests such as slugs and snails, and also for the smaller, more troublesome red spider mites and aphids.

If you cannot find a sufficiently shady place for the orchids erect a shade-cloth roof above the plants on the bench, leaving open ends or sides to allow a free movement of air.

The yellow Promenaea xanthina has been reintroduced on to this tree in its native Brazil where it naturally grows on the lower trunk of trees at high altitude in cloud-filled, humid rainforests.

In chemical processing, the wood is either burned by the process of dry distillation, with no air present, or else is decomposed by various chemical agents.

Originally, it was burned by the primitive method of the charcoal-stack, which yielded only charcoal used in the melting of ores and iron working. All other valuable products escaped either into the ground or the atmosphere. Today, it is distilled by modern methods, and it is the by-products, such as wood alcohol, vinegar, acetone and pitch oils - and not charcoal - that are of prime importance. It is mainly the hardwoods such as beech, oak, birch, maple and hornbeam which are used for industrial processing.

The chief product of the chemical decomposition of wood is cellulose, used in the manufacture of paper, textiles, guncotton and other products. The wood of spruce, fir, various pines, and poplar and, to a lesser degree, that of beech and birch is used mostly for this purpose.

The proportion of wood processed by chemical means is growing rapidly. The papermills of the developed countries, for example, consume large areas of forest every month. Other raw materials yielded by trees are essential oils, rosin and turpentine. These are obtained from live trees by boring holes in the outer layer of wood or bark, and catching the oils in containers placed beneath them.

The favoured wood of the building industry is that of conifers: spruce, pine, fir and larch. It is long, light, well suited for beams, columns, sawn wood, doors, window-boxes and in building ships and transport vehicles.

About fifteen years ago a stand of bristle-cone pine (Pious aristata Engelm.) was discovered in the Rocky Mountains of Nevada, in which the oldest trees had 4200 annual rings.

The aspen is a forest tree, occurring widely throughout the whole of Europe, and extending beyond the Arctic Circle in the north. In central Europe it grows in lowland and on mountains up to and above 1000 metres; it is most plentiful, however, in hill country, coppice forests and forests which are clear-felled.

It reaches heights of 25 to 30 metres and has a sparse, highly placed crown. The bark is smooth and coloured greenish grey, but old trees have fissured blackish bark at the lower part of the trunk. The buds on the twigs are lustrous-brown and sharply pointed. The aspen is a dioecious species (male and female flowers on separate trees). It flowers in March and the tiny seeds, imbedded in cottonwool-like hairs, are shed in late May. The leaf stalk is long and flattened, and even a slight breeze sets the leaf in motion. The aspen is a light-demanding tree and does not require rich soil.

The seeds are carried vast distances, thus making this a pioneer tree in clearings, pastures and fallow land. It also propagates well by root suckers. The wood is light, splits easily and is used to make matches, roof shingles and cellulose.

The twigs are yellow-brown to brown, the buds covered with a layer of balsam resin. The flowers and fruit are very much like those of the white poplar. The balsam poplar is a light-demanding tree that requires considerable moisture.

The white poplar propagates also by means of root suckers growing from the lateral roots, often as far as twenty metres from the trunk.

The white poplar grows in regions with a mild climate. It requires abundant light and ample moisture, and stands up well to flood water and slightly acidic soils. It is very attractive as an open- grown tree in water meadows, and, because of its vast root system, is used also to strengthen sand dunes. In intensive forest management it is being replaced by cultivated forms of black poplars. The wood is soft, and used to make cellulose and for turnery. The pyramidal form from Turkestan, known as Populus alba pyramidalis (syn. bolleana), often makes its appearance in parks.

Reiki healing is a spiritual practice. That's a bit vague so let me explain. It is healing done by one spirit for another (or for itself). As with any other form of energy healing, it seeks to balance the energy system first, and thus helps take care of the body.

The upshot is that Reiki in particular and energy healing generally are very good at smoothing the emotional wounds of the past.

In the process of living life, we tend to pick up a few emotional wounds. After a while, they can overwhelm you if you don't work to heal them. Reiki treatments can patch up those wounds and keep your emotional and physical wellbeing solid.

The effect on the body is generally subtle, but be ready to be surprised. Deep relaxation of the body is the least Reiki will do. Don't underestimate the boon of deep relaxation. How often do people get to truly unwind these days? Letting the body get some downtime to repair isn't to be scoffed at.

While Reiki is subtle, there are a few stories from my practice that I can share: Used on myself, a surgical operation healed extremely quickly and with hardly any painkillers after the first day. Motion sickness has been stopped in its tracks. Kitchen burns have disappeared.

The combination of Reiki healing with other forms of energy healing is generally considered the best way to go. Myself and the other practitioners I know go to the doctor when we've got a health problem, but we use Reiki to support modern medicine instead of replace it. Many of us will also blend Reiki with other forms of energy healing, but that's another topic entirely.

An interesting note is that Reiki cannot be used to harm. It just won't do it. I tell a story on my site about when I got ambitious and careless and tried to use a technique I hadn't been taught yet. Long story short - I wasn't harmed, but I was absolutely taught a lesson. Reiki won't harm, even if I might have deserved it.

Reiki is a huge area of study. This article is only a brief intro. Reiki can be used to heal through time, and over distance. There are also symbols that are handed down from teacher to student. There's much for you to discover, if you're interested.

How does ME/CFS start?

There are numerous ways of developing Fatigue conditions, including Post Viral Fatigue Syndrome (PVFS), Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS), Myalgic Encephalomyelitis (ME) along with Fibromyalgia (FM). Some common causes include - viruses, bacterial infections, operations, vaccinations, etc. The cause can also be connected to a stressful incident or period in a persons life. The common factor is that the person's system is under stress.

What is happening when we are under stress?

As a result of entering this state we produce a cocktail of chemicals - including cortisol, adrenalin and noradrenalin. This powerful group of chemicals is also produced during the fight or flight response - this is the natural process that is triggered in reaction to a threat - either real or perceived.

Many physiological changes occur during fight or flight

The sympathetic nervous system is responsible for a number of changes taking place. Heart rate and blood pressure increase in order to supply additional fuel to the major muscles. Blood sugar and thyroid levels are affected. Nonessential functions including digestion and immune system shut down allowing more energy for emergency systems.

How are the stress response and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome connected?

The initial virus, bug, trauma, vaccination etc. has already under put the system under stress. If there were other stressors present or the person was run-down at the time, the recovery period could be prolonged. If the recovery is slow this can be a cause for concern, which results in more stress. The immune system, which is already challenged becomes depleted, further slowing the process of recovery.

Sufferers are typically tested for other ailments by their doctors. After receiving the negative test results, the symptoms persist. People often turn to alternative approaches. Some people get temporary relief, but again the symptoms come back. It's common for people to lose trust in their body and energy levels. Getting the Documentation Right Often when people sell their home to a Trust, the Trust won't actually have the money to pay for it. So in place of the money and to avoid paying gift duty, the Trustees and the owners enter into a Deed of Acknowledgment of Debt.

The Deed will record the amount of money owed by the Trust for the purchase of the home. In certain circumstances, you can be made by judgement creditors and the Official Assignee, to call in the IOU. To assist in protecting against this, certain clauses should be contained in the Deed of Acknowledgement of Debt.

So, let us assume Mr and Mrs Smith have sold their home and have a Deed of Acknowledgement of Debt from the Trustees of the Family Trust. Let us also assume that Mr Smith incurs a large business debt which, for no fault of his own, he is unable to pay.

Feeling annoyed at not being paid, Mr Smith's creditor goes to Court and sues him for the money he is owed. Mr Smith claims he has no assets to pay the debt with and the creditor is left to find a way to get his money.

After doing some checking, the creditor finds the Trust has purchased a home from Mr Smith and has given Mr Smith a Deed of Acknowledgement of Debt (eg: an IOU) . The creditor would likely then force Mr Smith to ask the Trust for repayment of that IOU.

Why would the creditor want to do this? Because, if the Trust repays the debt it owes to Mr Smith it means he will have the money to pay the creditor! To repay the debt to Mr Smith, the Trust will likely have to sell some of its assets, such as the family home, and thus the Trust ends up providing no protection at all. All of this can however be avoided if appropriate clauses are put into the Deed of Acknowledgement of Debt.

In summary, Trusts are a useful and successful means of protecting assets. Anyone purchasing a substantial asset, such as a family home, needs to seriously consider taking protection. After all, you wouldn't buy a car without insuring it would you? So why spend even more money on a home without doing all you can to protect it?

You have to remember however that simply putting your family home into a Trust without having the right documentation won't offer much protection at all. So if you are going to get 'covered' ensure the documentation is correct. Do it right the first time.

A herbaceous perennial, 1.3-2.5 m in height. Stems: the main underground stems are generally referred to as tubers or corms and may be white, pink or yellow. The smaller offshoots produced by the main corm are often termed cormels; 10 or more cormels, 10-25 cm in length, are normally produced. Leaves: large, light green, sagittate or hastatc with a marginal vein and two large basal lobes, prominent marginal vein; petioles up to 3 in in length; pigmentation variable with red-purple forms occurring. Flowers: rarely formed, although flowering is more likely to occur in wet regions.

Moist soil conditions are generally essential but the roots are sensitive to excessive soil water. A high soil organic content is req. uired for optimum growth and sandy loam soils are usually suitable. The root system is fairly tolerant to alkaline soil conditions but sensitive to acidity. A pH of 6.0-6.8 is considered satisfactory, values lower than 5.0 reduce yields significantly. Mulching reduces the rate of water loss. In addition to the provision of an adequate supply of essential minerals in the soil before sowing, young plants usually benefit from additional applications of nitrogen during the period of active growth. Boron deficiency causes the formation of internal black spots in the root tissues and may be corrected by applying 10-30 kg/ha of borax. Beetroot also responds favourably to applications of sodium chloride in the region of 300-500 kg/ha. High temperatures, over 25C, adversely affect growth and roots are likely to show distinct zonal markings as a result of high soil temperatures. Plants grown in moderate rainfall conditions are unlikely to require additional water but irrigation is required during dry periods to maintain a regular rate of root development. An elevation of more than 600 m is normally required for successful root development, plants grown at sea level are unlikely to produce economic yields.

Propagation and planting Propagation is by seed, preferably monogerm or rubbed (divided). Seeds are sown in drills 25-30 cm apart, at a depth of 1-2 cm, seedlings being subsequently thinned to 10 cm apart in the rows. Transplants are rarely successful. The quantity of seed required per hectare varies from 10-20 kg. On a commercial scale, one million plants per hectare are established. Irrigation: This may be required during early stages of growth and during subsequent dry periods. Excessive soil water may produce deformed roots and irregular irrigation may induce cracking of the roots.

Plants normally produce roots from 5-8 cm in diameter within 70-90 days from sowing. The outer surface of the roots is sensitive to damage during harvesting. Yield: Yields of 15-24 t/ha may be obtained with good cultural techniques, including effective weed control. Seed production: Seed is not formed at low altitudes since a period of low temperature is required for the initiation of the flower stalk. At elevations over 1000 m flowering shoots 60-120 cm high may be produced. Seed should only be saved from plants which have first formed a satisfactory swollen root and do not flower until their second year. The plant is cross-pollinated, pollen being windborne over very long distances. It is therefore important that seed production of each B. vulgaris subspecies be sited in a separate area or zone. Seed yield is approximately 500 kg/ha; a single plant may produce up to 10 g of seed.

Commercially grown crops may yield approximately 50 t/ha.

The leaves, in addition to the roots, are often used as a cooked vegetable; the roots are widely used in salads and in the preparation of pickles and chutney.

Never heard of conversational hypnosis?

When I say conversational hypnosis I am not talking about putting people into deep trances like a certified hypnotist would do in his office.

The use of language to distract or by-pass the listener's conscious mind and make subliminal suggestions to their subconscious is conversational hypnosis.

One of the best at doing this is a guy called Robert Dilts. He calls this kind of language sleight of mouth. He says that language is really a map of our world, and that no two people live in the same world. (Deep, huh?)

What he is saying is that each individual sees the world in her own way, and she uses language to discuss her world and amazingly, even to form her world.

So basically, what Dilts is saying is that when you talk about something in a certain way, you actually begin to think about that thing in that way. For example, if you are always saying things like, I hate school then you will hate school. You are actually making yourself hate school by saying you hate school.

So what does this have to do with conversational hypnosis?

Just like you can make yourself hate school, you can also make other people hate school by constantly talking to them about how much you hate school.

This gives the expression attitudes are contagious a whole new meaning. You see, not only do someone's words influence their mind to create a new reality, they influence others in the same way.

Remember how your parents used to freak out if they thought you had the wrong friends? Well, there maybe something to that. If you hang around friends who think a certain way, the words they use will carry those attitudes like a virus into your subconscious and literally start infecting you to think the same way. For good or for bad.

You see how powerful your words are? One reason they are so strong is the subconscious brain absorbs them like a sponge.

The subconscious mind is always aware of what's going on around you. In fact, that's were most of a person's thinking goes on. But the subconscious is easily influenced by what people around you are saying.

Orchids Light Levels

It is often mistakenly thought that orchids need a constant temperature in which to grow, yet nowhere in nature does the temperature remain the same both night and day, summer and winter. Wherever orchids originate in the world, there exists a temperature fluctuation, and in cultivation orchids can withstand considerable temperature differences. Indeed, these variations are often the trigger that initiates flowering and regulates growth.

Tropical orchids can be divided into cool-growing, intermediate and warmgrowing types, depending upon where the species originated. Each group has its own temperature requirements in which the plants will grow at their best. Within these three temperature bands there is a considerable variation and some overlap of the requirements of each.

The cool-growing orchids are the largest group, and these include cymbidiums from the Himalayas, odontoglossums from the Andes, and many other genera, most of which are high-altitude plants, coming from elevations as high as 2,500m (8,000ft). They are often subjected to cold nights that drop to freezing, but at high altitudes the air is thinner, and occasional frosts do them no harm. In cultivation, we grow these orchids in a temperature band that rises from 10C (50F) minimum to 30C (86F) maximum.

In winter, most orchids, with the exception of the phalaenopsis and paphiopedilums, can take all the light that is available. This will ensure that sufficient ripening of the pseudo bulbs takes place, which is also an important factor in their flowering.

Orchids grown indoors have less light available, and the orchids will only receive this from one direction, so the dangers of giving too much light is not so great a problem. During the winter, it can be a disadvantage if plants are not getting enough light, and it can be difficult to increase this through the window area.

After their winter's rest, orchids commence their new growth in the spring. Repot the plants as soon as this happens and before the new roots start at the base.

Calanthes are deciduous orchids which produce their flower spikes at the end of the growing season, as the plant is about to shed its leaves and rest. The flowers will appear while the plant is leafless.

Orchids can be fed at all ages, from young seedlings and propagations to adult plants. Feed only healthy plants, however, because they have the ability to absorb and convert the chemicals. Do feed plants that are sick or have lost their roots. New roots that appear may be burnt by the residue remaining in the compost (growing medium). For the same reason, do not feed orchids that are resting. Their roots will have become inactive, and the chemicals will remain in the compost where they may cause harm as the plant sans into growth in the spring.

Trees with a large leaf surface are similarly efficient filters of polluted city air. Their leaves, especially if they are tomentose and covered with fine hairs, entrap large quantities of dust particles, which arc then washed off onto the ground by rain. The fact that trees and shrubs lower the speed of wind in city streets also promotes the settling of dust and the clearing of the air. Rows of trees and shrubs between traffic lanes or between street and sidewalk lower the noise of traffic by as much as 10 to 15 per, cent.

The effect of tree belts or forest areas promoting the absorption of rainwater is very well known. In a forest, even after a heavy downpour, the water soaks rapidly into the ground and does not form puddles. The chief reason behind this is the soil structure: forest litter, high humus content and the small channels left in the soil by decayed roots.

Age-old trees, whose lireading branches offered welcome shade to farmers taking a rest from their toil in the fields one or two hundred years ago, iliday offer the same welcome respite to urban man seeking elaxation in the countryside.

When we stand in awe before these giant and majestic trees, we realize that they are as much as that of a nation's cultural heritage as are outstanding buildings, paintings and sculptures, and other artistic works; and therefore, our duty and responsibility to preserve them for sterility.

Replacing Compost for Orchids

Orchids will grow in almost any type of container, but for practical purposes they are usually cultivated in plastic pots, which are light and easy to use. They also stay dean in a humid environment and can be washed and reused. Terracotta pots are also suitable - and were once considered preferable to plastic pots because they kept the roots cooler in high temperatures - but they are costly and the larger sizes can be considerably heavy. Also, being porous, they dry out much more quickly, and it is easier to maintain a constantly moist compost (growing medium) with plastic pots.

These materials include Rockwool, which is produced for the horticultural industry from spun volcanic pumice. Rockwool looks like discoloured cotton wool, and the surface is sometimes stained green with an algae that grows in response to the nutrients.

Compost that has deteriorated will have dissolved into small particles; these will wash through to the bottom of the pot, clog up the drainage and cause water to stagnate, thus speeding up the whole process of decomposition. Insect pests, such as woodlice, will also break down compost (growing medium) and can cause rapid deterioration.

Once the compost has broken down in this way, the roots cannot thrive and will quickly die. Speedy repotting is essential. First cut away all the dead roots and remove all the old compost, then replace it with fresh material throughout. Roots that can be seen to circle the rim of the pot without penetrating to the bottom indicate that the compost (growing medium) is unsuitable.

The best time for repotting is in the spring, but not if a plant is in flower. Most orchids commence their new growth at this time, and the ideal moment to repot is when the new growth is a few inches high. This is just before the formation of the new roots, which always appear after the new growth. When the new roots start to grow, they will immediately penetrate the fresh compost (growing medium), which eliminates any danger of damaging them. The next best time to repot is in autumn. This suits many cattleyas, which can often produce new roots at this time, as well as young seedlings, which need to be kept growing forward throughout the winter.

These orchids particularly like a loose, open compost where their roots can breathe. Most composts (growing mediums) are supplied in a dried state to lessen their weight, but they need to be moistened before they are used. Remove just enough compost from the bag to serve your purposes, and water well, leaving it overnight to drain.

The next day it will feel just right to work with. Do not return any unused damp compost to the bag, but leave it to dry out first. If it is returned to the bag while it is still wet, it will produce a mould, which will spread to the rest of the contents of the bag, Always store orchid compost dry.

Family Trust Basics: What Is An Estate Plan?

Estate planning involves considering how assets are to be passed from one generation to the next. The usual components of an estate plan are Wills and Memoranda of Wishes. A Will is a document that deals with an individual's personal estate upon death. A Memorandum of Wishes is a letter written to Trustees of the Trust to describe how assets are to be dealt with within the Trust.

A common mistake is not to link Wills and the establishment of a Trust. As a accountancy and legal practice we often see individuals who have established Trusts but have not prepared new Wills to reflect this. In this instance, they often have existing Wills prepared many years before that pass assets to spouses or children personally upon death. Once a Trust is established such a Will is flawed for two reasons.

First, you do not want assets to pass to surviving spouses or children personally when they can be directed straight into a Trust free of gifting restrictions. That is, it is important to note that any bequests under a Will are not subject to gift duty.

Second, given that a Trust has been established and the individual is seeking to minimise, their personal estate their Will has become redundant to a certain extent.

Broadly speaking, the objective of an effective Will is to direct assets into the ownership of the Trust on death. This will prevent assets from accruing in the hands of the surviving spouse and family members and also prevent gifting programmes from being extended. Having directed all assets into the Trust, it is then under the Memorandum of Wishes where instruction is provided as to how the assets of the Trust are to be dealt with.

A Memorandum of Wishes is not a legally binding document. It is a letter written to the Trustees of the Trust, describing the settlor's wishes as to how Trust assets are to be dealt with.

The key to an effective Memorandum of Wishes is to provide the Trustees with instruction to consider the asset protection requirements of any beneficiaries when making distributions from the Trust. For example, if a beneficiary is in a relationship, the Trustees should consider the stability of the relationship and the desirability of passing assets through to the beneficiary individually, where they could be subject to a relationship property claim in the event of a separation.

The root system is greatly influenced and modified by the environment. In shallow soils over rock, heavy clay soils, or on sites with a high level of underground water, even species whose roots normally penetrate to great depths may have shallow anchorage.

Conversely, in humus-rich sandy soils the roots of woody plants which normally spread out may penetrate to greater depths. Roots anchor the tree in the ground, absorb water and the mineral elements dissolved in it, and serve as storage for reserve food supplies. The structure of the roots is very similar to that of the trunk, only somewhat simpler.

In the cells and cell walls of heartwood various organic and inorganic substances are stored, e.g. tannins, resins, silicon dioxide, etc. In some trees such as the yew, larch, pine and oak the heartwood is further distinguished from the sapwood by a darker coloration. Heartwood is generally much more durable and of higher quality than sapwood and, in the case of some tropical trees in which the wood is subject to rapid decay and damage by pests, the soft sapwood is hacked off on the spot and only the heartwood is shipped for further processing.

Roots aerate the soil and promote the disintegration of the rock substrata. In this they are aided by the carbon dioxide they eliminate as well as by certain chemical substances which break up mineral particles. The nutriments in the soil arc also made available by various bacteria and fungi growing in association with the roots. Nitrogen-fixing bacteria that increase the nitrogen content of the soil live in nodules attached to the roots of the alder, black locust, honey locust and other woody plants of the pea family (Leguminosae).

On the bark we can often see small round or slit-like patches that are slightly raised, and different in colour, from the surrounding bark. These are called lenticels and serve as a path for the exchange of gases between the atmosphere and the living cells inside the trunk and branches.

The symbiosis of mushrooms and woody plants occurs primarily in soils rich in organic substances and raw humus; in soils with insufficient organic matter such a symbiotic association may change to a parasitic one.

Like all the flowering plants, trees reproduce and spread naturally by seeds. Some species and garden varieties also produce suckers or shoots directly from the roots, e.g. aspen and some of the elms. Seeds are the sexual means of propagation, formed by the fusion of pollen grains (male cells.) and ovules (egg or female cells).

In the case of trees without air sacs (larch,Douglas fir, walnut) the pollen grains can be carried only several tens of metres and the trees produce a large number of barren seeds. Trees pollinated by insects produce a far smaller quantity of pollen, as more of the grains manage to reach their intended destination on the body of the insect.

When the anther is ripe it bursts and releases the pollen grains, i.e. the actual male cells which are of microscopic dimensions. The pistil is formed of an ovary, containing the ovules, and a stigma, with either a sticky or a hairy surface, to trap the pollen grains. Quite often, the stigma is attached to the ovary by a stalk or style which may be very short, or long and slender.

Furthermore, adapted to pollination by wind-borne pollen, they frequently lack, or possess only rudimentary, petals, whose I light colours otherwise serve to attract insects. The mode of pollination largely determines the period of flowering of the various species.

Trees producing large seeds and thus requiring larger food reserves (oak, beech, walnut) may only bear them at two to four year intervals. Again, in harsher climates, e.g. in high mountain regions or in the north, where a longer time is required to accumulate the necessary food stores, the seed-bearing intervals may be longer.

Insect-pollinated trees such as the lime, black locust or cherry blossom later when the crown comes into leaf.

Trees and shrubs are perennial plants whose stems become woody and last for many years. Trees usually have a single erect stem or trunk which at a certain height branches out to form a crown, whereas shrubs branch from near to, or at, ground level.

Trees and shrubs are also differentiated according to height. Small trees attain, a height of about eight metres, those of the second category fifteen to twenty-four metres, and those of the first category more than twenty-five metres. The thickness of a tree is usually given by the diameter of the trunk measured at breast height, i.e. 1.3 metres above ground.

In other words, tree with buds arranged in spirals has the leaves also arranged in spirals. Buds are protected against drying out and frost damage by modified leaves known as scales; either by just single scale (willow or plane tree), two scales (alder), or several scales (beech, hornbeam and oak). Distinguishing features of the scales are colour and pubescence. Some trees that bloom in early spring can be identified by the flower buds, which are of different shapes, e.g. willow, elm, poplar and cherry.

A further good means of identification in some trees are the short, peg-like projections known as spurs (cherry, apple) on which the flower buds are borne. Some trees' twigs have distinctive large or small leaf scars which remain after the leaves falhe horseshoe-shaped ones of horse chestnut are noteworthy.

Spines and thorns are another good means of identification, e.g. on the twigs of the wild pear, black locust and honey locust. The twigs of other trees have conspicuous lenticels (bird-cherry, white ash), waxy warts (birches) or corky plates (hedge maple and smooth-leaved elm).

Under normal conditions trees are the strongest and fittest members of the plant realm.

Affirmation statements -we hear them spoken often by motivational speakers, authors, writers etc., but what can we personally do to harness the power of affirmations in our own lives?

Think about a time in your life when you desired to make a change " something major, like finding a new job, moving to a new city or home, or something less momentous like a New Years resolution to improve your overall health. Can you think of a past experience like that? Now, think about the tools that you used or steps that you took to help guide you through that transition and keep you focused on achieving your goals while making that change.

These tools in effect, involved you setting in motion a series of events to accomplish the goals you'd set out for yourself, and one of the easiest ways to achieve success is to create affirmations.

Affirmations are very easy to use and quite powerful once you get the hang of practicing this daily exercise. Affirmations keep you focused on whats important to you and help you achieve positive transitions. Basically an affirmation is a declaration that something is already true and has come to fruition in your life in the present moment. You have to believe what you are looking to achieve or obtain has already arrived in order for it to show up in your life.

If your desire is to create personal well-being, first choose a phrase that describes what you desire. For example, if you desire to adopt a healthier lifestyle, then your affirmation statement could say, I feel good and look good when I live a healthy lifestyle. Or I enjoy the great feelings I get from exercising daily. Short powerful statements are more focused and work much better to bring about results than long, drawn-out paragraphs.

There are some rules to follow when creating an affirmation that Id like to share with you.

Rule # 1: The phrase must be in the present tense, such as I feel good, as opposed to I will feel good which implies that at some point in the future you might achieve your goal. Remember to phrase your affirmation as if your desire

Rule #2: The statement must always be written from a positive perspective, instead of a negative one. For example, you wouldn't say I don't feel good when I am not healthy as this places your health - which you are trying to change " in a negative context. Always phrase your desire/affirmation statement in a positive context and in the present tense.

Rule #3: Repeat often. After you create an affirmation, write it down on something that you can keep with you, like a notebook or card to put in your purse or wallet, or place it somewhere that you look at often throughout your day such as on your bathroom mirror or your desk at work. Make sure that you read your affirmation statements as many times during your day as possible.

Studies have shown that using the power of affirmations can lower stress and I have found this to be true in my own life. When I get clear about what I want in my life and focus on my desires with affirmations every day, I am more content and peaceful. What we focus on grows, so the more you focus your attention on your affirmations, the more likely you are to create positive changes in your life and achieve your dreams.

My favorite book on affirmations and the power of healing is Louise Hays, You Can Heal Your Life. In this fascinating book you can learn more about the healing power of affirmations and how you can harness them to improve your overall health and well-being. And frankly, who wouldn't like to live a healthier, more serene life in these turbulent times?

Although each new species was greeted with enthusiasm, the first hybrids that appeared were met with both amazement and scepticism, for such an achievement was once thought impossible.

The first great heyday of orchid cultivation in Europe had been brought to an abrupt end. Following the war years, the coastal region of California from Los Angeles to San Francisco became an important orchid haven. In the warm climate, they could flourish out of doors with shade-cloth for protection from direct sun. This was a far cry from the long, cold winters in most of Europe.

Cattleyas and phalaenopsis were found to do well in this climate and could be grown with no expensive heating bills. The same was true in New Zealand and parts of Australia, whose climate favoured cymbidiums, enabling them to be grown without artificial heating.

The new awareness of how orchid hybrids could he created led to many experiments with cross-breeding, giving botanists a clearer understanding of which orchids were related and would therefore interbreed. Orchids are extremely generous at providing abundant seed, but the masses of beautiful golden seed proved to be extremely reluctant to germinate or grow.

Most of these concentrated on producing new hybrids, untapping an enormous potential and taking advantage of the latest techniques, which offered unlimited opportunities. Increasingly, orchid growers were coming from the middle classes, who lived in the spreading suburbs of the cities and grew their orchids in greenhouses no more than 10m (30k) long.

Today, hybridizing has come a long way from the tentative steps taken by John Dominy in Veitch's nursery. The Royal Horticultural Society in London is the world authority for the registration of orchid hybrids, where over 100,000 have been entered. This astounding figure continues to rise by over 3,000 per year, testimony to an insatiable appetite for better plants. The majority of these new varieties are produced for the pot-plant trade, which demands a supply of cheaply produced, easily grown orchids.

The first part of the 20th century saw an explosion of hybridizing and seed raising.

Twenty years after the First World War, the orchid industry was again flourishing when the Second World War began, dashing all hopes of further progress. There was difficulty in obtaining fuel for amateur greenhouses, while commercial nurseries had to be used for the production of food crops. The lack of skilled growers saw the demise of the last remaining large collections.

Methods of raising orchids have improved so much that it is now possible to bloom seedlings within three to four years from the flasks, whereas previously this had taken up to seven years.

Repotting and Dividing Orchids

To drop on a plant, remove its pot by up-turning and tapping the pot on the edge of the bench. It should slide out easily, and you should see a ball of white roots holding the compost in place. Select a new pot that is about 5cm (2in) larger to give sufficient room for another one to two years' growth.

Any leftover pieces of less than three rood pseudobulbs will not flower for another two to three years. Because such plants may have been in their present pot for more than two years, they will be extremely potbound and difficult to remove. You can try tapping out, and running the pruning knife around the inside rim to loosen the roots, but if it is still firmly attached you may have to cut away the pot. This is often necessary with cattleyas, whose roots will adhere to the inside of the pot. Before you start, lie some newspaper on the bench and keep the plant on this.

Stand the plant on this, ensuring that the base of the new growth is level with the rim of the pot If it stands higher, remove a little of the old compost from around the base until you can sit the plant deeper in the pot.

Once the plant is in position, hold it firmly and place a band of thin, plastic-coated wire around the base to secure it in position. 'rake care to pass the wire around the medium and rhizome, without cutting into a pseudobulb. Pull the wire tight and twist it using the pliers, then cut off the ends. Place another tie farther up, if necessary. When finished, the plant must be secure on its bark. If it is loose, it will not root into the bark or progress well. Finally, trim the base material with a pair of scissors to give a neat, professional finish to your work. Spray the plant daily and give it an occasional soak in water to make sure that the base remains damp. !Pam growing in this way will need mailar spraying and watering to them moist than ones in pots.

If you wish to add to your stock of plants by propagating, these back bulbs can he potted up on their own. They will often produce a new growth, which can be grown on to flower within a few years. Where before you had one untidylooking plant, you will now have two or more smaller, neater plants. Repot these in pots of a similar size to the one the old orchid came from; this should leave sufficient room in each pot for the plant on for another two years.

Place plant to one side of the pot, with the adest pseudobulbs at the back and the growths facing forward. Crock the ease of the new pot and place sufficient mmpost (growing medium) on top so that when you insert the plant, the base al the new growth will be level with, or nst below, the rim of the pot. Fill in with artnpost - tucking some under and mound the roots to ensure that there are a, open spaces - until the plant is firmly a position and the compost finishes -Mow the pot rim. This will ensure that when you water the plant the compost la not be washed over the rim.

Not all large plants need to be divided into smaller pieces, unless you rant to increase your stock. Smaller- !rowing species that will not become =manageable can be left as one specimen plant, provided that most or all of the pseudobulbs are leafed. Where there is a cluster of leafless pseudobulbs a( the centre of a plant, these need to be removed or reduced in number before they weaken the plant. The exception here is with the deciduous lycastes and angulocastes, where only the leading pseudobulbs are in leaf at any one time. When you have divided your plant, remember to write out new labels for cath piece of the plant. Return the plants to their growing area and give them a light overhead spray to prevent any dehydration through their leaves after the root pruning.

Separate the orchid into as many divisions as you wish, but bear in mind that to maintain flowering, a division will need to have at least three pseudobulbs in leaf with one new growth.

Tips on Growing Fig Tree

When replacing most of the soil, mix in with it two 6-inch potfuls of mortar rubble, and if this is not available use one 6-inch potful of crushed chalk.

Morello cherries are usually budded, though there is a variety in Kent known as the Wye Morello that grows well on its own roots.

Frequent failures of figs in Great Britain is due (a) to cold winters and (b) to lack of sunshine, with the result that the wood does not mature sufficiently well. The roots must always be restricted so as to aim at the minimum amount of new wood formation. The fruit is largely produced on laterals, and vertical shoots are less productive than horizontal ones. The fruit is produced on the current year's growth and at the tips are the tiny immature fruits which do not develop in the same year but stay as 'fruit buds' swelling out into fruit the following summer. Figs are grown on their own roots. I never feeds my figs for it is tremendously important not to encourage rank growth.

The method of training is, of course, on the fan system, and wires are therefore provided at 18 inches apart so that the branches may be tied in. It is easy fe,x a fig to cover a wall space of about 35 feet on a wall 15 feet high. Such a tree, of course, bears prodigiously. But even young trees four years of age will bear twenty to twenty- five fruits if they are happy.

Pruning is indeed a very difficult job because, as has already been said, the fruit is borne on the length of thin young wood which grew during the previous season. On a fan-trained tree, therefore, one has to be constantly cutting away the older wood and tying in the new wood. With bush trees, it is advisable to cut back some of the older branches each season the moment the leaves have fallen, and then, if there are any young growths in the centre of the bush, these will have to be cut back in February, the pruning cut being made just above a pointed single shoot bud. It is the double buds that are the fruit buds.

If one is to succeed with sour cherry pruning, it does mean that the pruning must be fairly ruthless after the first six years. After ten years there is usually a fair amount of dead wood to cut out owing to the Brown Rot Disease. It is better not to grass down sour cherries but to grow them on cultivated land which is properly mulched, so that the roots need not be disturbed by cultivation.

Credit Cards - It All Started In The 18th Century

Have you ever stopped to think about the evolution of your credit card? Where did it come from? How was this system of paying for your purchases developed? Would you believe that the history of credit cards actually started way back in the 18th century?

In 1730, Christopher Thompson, a furniture merchant, created the first advertisement for credit by offering furniture that could be paid off weekly. This introduced the idea that people who couldn't afford to buy "big-ticket" items could make regular payments until the full cost of the items were paid.

That idea was picked up and used, from the 18th century until the early part of the 20th century, by tallymen. Tallymen sold clothes that the purchasers could pay for in small weekly payments. They kept a tally (thus the name tallymen) of what people had bought on a wooden stick. One side of the stick was marked with notches to represent the amount of debt and the other side was a record of payments.

During the rise of the British middle class, bankers introduced the idea of overdraft protection. This was one of the first forms of consumer credit because it was really a type of loan that kicked in automatically if an account didn't have enough money in it to cover the checks written against it.

Industries recognized the need for Business Credit The system of credit took a real turn in 1914, when Western Union, in the interest of good customer service, gave some of their more prominent customers a metal card to be used in deferring payments - interest free - on services used. This system became known as "Metal Money".

Then another company realized the value of making goodwill gestures to their customers. In 1924, General Petroleum Corporation issued the first metal money specifically for gasoline and automotive services. They offered this first to their employees, then to select customers and then, because the system seemed to work so well, to the general public.

The Ford Motor Company played a large part in creating the consumer credit business. Just like Christopher Thompson back in 1730, Ford recognized that not all Americans had enough savings to buy a Model T. Even those who did have enough might not want to put their whole life-savings into just a car. So Small Loan Companies, or Finance Companies, began making their first car loans.

In the late 1930's, American Telephone and Telegraph (AT&T) introduced the "Bell System Credit Card." Other industries followed suit - railroads and airlines introduced similar cards. The system of credit was fast growing in popularity.

But then World War II came along and, with it, came the prohibition of all use of credit and charge cards. However, as soon as the War was over, business starting booming. Travel became more popular. People were also beginning to acquire more costly modern conveniences for their homes, like kitchen appliances and washing machines. These demands on the budget made the concept of credit more popular because people could buy things with credit cards that they couldn't afford to buy with cash. So the demand for credit cards increased in ratio to the improvement in lifestyles. People wanted more - and they wanted it now!

Charge cards evolved as lifestyles improved After seeing these trends of increased travel and spending among those who held charge cards, banks became interested in credit cards and online banking.

Since they were in the business of lending money, they saw the potential of gaining income by charging interest on credit cards.

1950 marked the real beginning of the credit card most of us are familiar with today. Diner's Club, Inc. introduced the first credit card that could be used at a variety of stores and businesses. This card was established primarily for businessmen to use for travel and entertainment expenses. The Diner's Club gave its cardholders up to 60 days to make payment in full. Merchants were eager to accept the card because they found that credit card customers usually spent more if they were able to "charge it".

The first bank to implement this system was the Franklin National Bank in New York. In 1951, after screening applicants, they issued the Charge-It card to those approved for credit. This card could be used by consumers at local retail establishments. It worked much like the credit card systems of today - the consumer made a purchase using the card; the retailer obtained authorization from Biggins Bank, and closed the sale. The Bank reimbursed the retailer and collected the debt from the consumer at a later date.

What a great idea for everybody involved! Other banks saw the same potential. In 1958, the "Don't leave home without it" card was introduced by American Express. But the first revolving-credit card was issued in the State of California by the Bank of America. The BankAmericard, marketed all across the state, was the first card to offer its cardholders payment options, where they could pay the debt in full or they could make monthly payments while the banks charged interest on the remaining balances.

In 1965, Bank of America saw more potential for income and control so they issued licensing agreements to banks of all sizes across the nation. These agreements allowed the other banks to issue BankAmericards and to interchange transactions through issuing banks. Now everybody was getting in on the act!

All these credit card systems - they needed some regulation The credit card industry was booming! But some kind of regulation became necessary. Charge card issuing and processing became too large of a task for the banking industry to handle. In 1966, fourteen US banks had formed Interlink, an association with the ability to exchange information on credit card transactions. In 1967, four California banks had formed the Western States Bancard Association and introduced the MasterCharge program to compete with the BankAmericard Program. By 1969, most independent bank charge cards had been converted over to either BankAmericard or Master Charge cards.

As the bankcard industry grew, banks interested in issuing cards became members of either BankAmericard or MasterCharge. Their members shared card program costs, making the bankcard program available to even small financial institutions.

By the mid 1970s, the credit card industry started exploring international waters. But the name "America" caused some problems. So, in 1977, BankAmericard became VISA. Then in 1979, MasterCharge followed suit and changed its name to MasterCard.

In 1979, with the improvement of electronic processing, electronic dial-up terminals and magnetic stripes on the back of credit cards allowed retailers to swipe the customer's credit card through the dial-up terminal, which accessed issuing bank cardholder information. The advantage of this system, besides saving paper, was the increased speed of processing authorizations - one to two minutes. It also decreased credit card fraud.

Credit cards today - an abounding industry There are five leaders in the credit card industry today:

Visa International MasterCard American Express Air Miles Discover Diner's Club There are other check processing companies trying to penetrate the market, like Euro Card, JCB and ATM companies, but credit cards still account for over 90% of all e-commerce transactions.

Visa has been a leader in credit card innovation. This has brought them the recognition as the world's leading credit card association, with over one billion cards being issued, and carrying over 50% of all credit card transactions conducted worldwide.

One easy method for better sex is to have sex when you aren't both too tired at the end of the day. Make some time for sex when you both will have energy rather than be half asleep. Then simply take that energy and focus some of it on pleasing your mate. They'll definitely notice and get more into pleasing you as well.

The Goblet System of Growing Grapes

The aim here is to produce a vine shaped like an open bush. The rods are allowed to grow naturally for the first year after planting. The rods are then cut back to within two buds of their base in January.

They could also be grown on the 'Grow as you like' system, being allowed to scramble over a trellis or cover a fence or wall. Under this system very little pruning is necessary, though it does pay to cut back the fruiting laterals in the summer at two leaves above a bunch.

Once again the vine is allowed to grow naturally the first year and then it is cut down to within two buds of its base. The strongest of the shoots that result is kept and is tied perpendicularly to a stout bamboo cane. All side growths that develop are pinched out with the thumb and forefinger to their base. When all the leaves have fallen, the long cane should first of all be tied to the stake and then should be carefully bent so that it can be tied along the lower wire. This bending of the cane, at an angle of 90 degrees, is important because the flow of sap is checked.

Red Spiders can be detected by examining the back of the leaf with a magnifying glass. Red Spider is a bad name. Yellow Mite would be better.

Some people give each vine one stake, 4 feet out of the ground, and then, instead of tying the rods out to 'form a goblet, they merely tie the tips of the rods to the top of the stakes to form an inverted cone. By the way, do not allow the young cane to go on growing after the requisite number of bunches of grapes have been produced. You should always pinch out the growing point at 3 leaves beyond the top hunch.

This method is not suitable for varieties producing very thin canes or for those which bear the best fruit at the end of very long canes.

English Yew Taxus and European Silver Fir

The Douglas fir is a native of North America growing from California up to British Columbia. It was introduced in Europe in 1828 and is widely cultivated today in the woods and parks of western and central, Europe because of its rapid growth and high quality wood.

It is now found in broad-leaved woods from England to Greece, eastwards to the western Himalayas and South to North Africa. It is estimated that there are about 30,000 of these trees in Germany. In France it is most abundant in the Vosges and the foothills of the Alps and in Great Britain it can be found from southern England to Scotland and in Ireland.

The common yew can attain a height up to 20 metres, but often it remains only a shrub. It grows very slowly, but may live to the age of a thousand years. It is distinguished by its reddish bark, dark leaves and bright red fruits. The leaves are generally two-ranked, and the inconspicuous flowers, borne on the underside of the twigs, bloom in March. The yew is a dioecious species, and the scarlet, fleshy fruits, which mature in late September and arc a favourite food of birds, are borne only on female trees. Today the yew is widely cultivated in parks as an ornamental, including its yellow-variegated and pyramidal form.

The related form Pseudotsuga glauca Mayr. grows in the Rocky Mountains at heights above 2000 metres. It has a thinner and less deeply furrowed bark, blue-green needles and cones with reflexed bracts. It has a slower rate of growth and is more suitable as an ornamental.

The Norway spruce is a typical tree of the mountain forests of central Europe and the northern European taiga. It has a narrow, conical crown with branches arranged in regular whorls, and grows to heights of more than 40 metres, in virgin stands up to 60 metres at the age of 400 to 700 Years. The bark is brown and furrowed. The leaves, rhomboid in section, are borne on peg-like projections, a typical characteristic of all spruces, which give the twig a rough surface when the leaves have fallen. The female flowers resemble small, erect reddish "candles" at first, but later change into pendant brown, elongate cones. The winged seeds are shed on warm and windy spring days.

The Scots pine thrives in almost any climate and in poorer and drier soils. That is why it may be found on sandy or shallow soils that other more demanding trees find unsuitable. The wood is light and of good quality, the heartwood pale brown - used for columns, windows, doors, sleepers, etc. In some places its resin is used by the chemical industry.

What Is Dream Control?

Dream control, which is the ability granted to us by the technique of lucid dreaming is having the knowledge that you are dreaming even while in the middle of a dream. Common Techniques For Inducing Lucid Dreaming

This method of learning dream control was developed by scientist Dr. Stephen LaBerge and is known as MILD (sort for mnemonic induction of lucid dreams). This technique can let you control the course of events in your dreams " you are only limited by your imagination!

A dream diary can also help you to get started with lucid dreaming. Immediately after you wake up, write down each and every detail that you remember from your dreams. After doing this for a while, youll train your mind to remember your dreams; this is the first step to dream control and soon youll start having lucid dreams!

Tame monsters in your nightmares, 'visit' any location you wish, explore imagined worlds that you envision within your own mind, speak to anyone you like, and basically be free of all worldly constraints and limits. With dream control, all of this is possible, in essence, giving us the power to be the ruler of our own nightly fantasy worlds where we are in complete control of everything that transpires.

As with anything else, though there can be too much of a good thing. According to psychologists and other experts, our dreams can be a way that our subconscious minds communicate important messages to us. So while lucid dreaming is indeed an incredible experience, youll also want to have natural dreams " so remember to take some time off from lucid dreaming now and again.

While orchid plants themselves are extremely varied, in their flowers they know no bounds in terms of variation in structure and colour. The flowers are so diverse and often incredibly beautiful, in stark contrast to what some see as distinctly unattractive plants. Many people are amazed that such beautiful flowers can come from what they consider to be untidy or ugly plants, though to the true enthusiast, most orchid plants are handsome.

Not all orchid blooms can be described as beautiful, however. While the most favoured and widely grown orchids are undeniably lovely, there are many whose flowers are curious, strange and even grotesque in appearance. The genus containing the greatest number of species is Bulbophyllum, but, among its thousand or so species, there are very few that could be described as pretty. While all orchids conform to one basic design, this has been duplicated and modified a thousand times, each variation designed to suit one orchid's particular habitat or way of growing.

One part of the flower has always become much exaggerated, with petals or lip dominating the flower. All these modifications have evolved to attract a specific pollinator, and to do this some orchids have gone to extraordinary lengths.

Cymbidiurn species from vastly different parts of the world, thousands of miles apart, will cross:breed, pointing to a close relationship between them that has endured despite a long separation from a common ancestor. Cymbidium devonianum, which originates from the Himalayas can be crossed with C. madidum from northern Australia; the resulting hybrid produces blooms that are midway between the species. Among the slipper orchids, the paphiopedilums and phragmipediums appear similar. Hybridizing among the former has produced some fantastic results. However, there are no crosses with the South American phragmipediums.

At the centre are a number of ridges that guide the insect to the bloom. These are usually bright yellow and are called the honey guides. Above the lip is the column - a single, finger-like structure containing the reproductive parts of the flower. The pollen is found at the end dorsal sepal of the column, usually in two, four or six masses. These pollen masses contain the pollen grains, or pollinia, which, unlike other flowers, are not in a powder form. "l'hey are held at the end of the column under a protective cap called the anther.

The pollen masses are golden yellow and attached to a viscid disc by two thin threads. As an insect emerges from a flower, the sticky pad attached to the pollinia adheres to its head or thorax. The anther falls away as the insect flies off, carrying the pollinia to the next bloom.

The spectacular vandas from Southeast Asia appear, at first glance, to be compatible with the vast number of angraecoid orchids from Africa and Madagascar. The foliage of Angraecum sesquipedale, for example, resembles that of the vandas more closely than those other monopodials, the phalaenopsis. However, the vandas are closer in evolutionary terms to the phalaenopsis, and these two will hybridize, along with many others that make up this alliance but that look totally different.

Be aware of those places that could be harmful to orchids. Do not stand the plants directly in front of, or above, an open fire, where they will quickly succumb to overheating and dehydration. Remember that appliances such as the fridge in the kitchen and the television in the living room both give out warmth when working, which is harmful to orchids placed nearby. Also, avoid any area where the plants will be in a draught (draft) from an open doorway or other source of cold air. Finally, wherever you place your orchids, take care to prevent them being knocked over or damaged by pets or children.

Tips on Growing Sweet Cherries

Everything should be done in the case of the fan-trained sweet cherry to keep growth down to a minimum. Strong side growths, for instance, can be bent round in a circle and then as fruit buds form lower down they may be pruned back to this point. If the trees do get out of hand, then the only thing to do is to root prune.

Mulching with sedge peat to the depth of an inch for 5 feet or so around each tree ensures that the trees are protected against drought in summer and yet they do not receive too much nitrogen. The use of well-rotted dung or good compost around cherries invariably postpones cropping and encourages disease- because of excessive growth.

Because standard cherry trees are such strong growers, they have to be planted not less than 40 feet apart either way. This is another reason, incidentally, why it is impossible to grow sweet cherries on a small scale. These trees should be allowed to grow slowly and so they are usually not pruned in the year following planting.

After that it is best to leave the cherry branches to grow naturally and just to thin out here and there so as to remove crossing and rubbing branches. Care should be taken when carrying out the leader pruning in the first four years (a) to make the cuts just above a bud, and (b) to leave the tops of the branches as level as possible.

In the case of the wall cherries, the aim in the early stages should be to space the branches out a foot apart, radiating like a fan, and then, having cut the one-year-old growths back by half for two years after planting, it is best to leave the tree to grow naturally, except for summer pruning in. July and August, which may consist of (a) cutting back the very strong growths growing perpendicularly away from the wall right down to their base, and (b) the weaker growths to within three buds of their base. If growths develop on the wall side, these had better be rubbed out when they are only an inch long.

Two other reciprocal varieties are Early Rivers and Noir Guben. It is most important to consult the nurseryman re the fertility rules before making the purchase. Though books say that it is possible to plant cherries as cordons, I had never found these satisfactory because of the problems of pruning.

Buddhist Symbols: Dorje, Bell and Others

Buddhist symbols are generally considered in relation to a particular culture or religious affiliation. Everebody heard about Eight Auspicious Symbols, dorje (vajra) and bell, stupa etc. In India, it is not surprising to find some commonly used Buddhist symbols, despite the fact that Hinduism is the main religion there. However, their representation and role serve totally different purposes. The Buddha lived about the 6th century but there has not been found any Buddhist art or symbols from this time. According to the Buddhist holy writings, the Buddha used such images and forms of art like the Wheel of Life in his teachings as symbolic representations to explain or elaborate a particular Buddhist teaching. Some artifacts dating to the time of Emperor Ashoka have been found and his conversion to Buddhism is believed was the first step to the spread of Buddhism around India and its neighboring countries.

Buddhist art that was excavated around the first century was in most cases symbolic by nature and it was not until the 6th century with the appearance of Buddhist Tantra that Buddhist art took on a whole new meaning. With visualization and imagination being used in Buddhist meditation, Tibetan Buddhism was born. From here, a large number of deities appeared and with it came a vast collection of Buddhist art and symbols that was used in Buddhist meditation as well as kept in Buddhist temples.

Common symbols found in almost all Buddhist temples are the Lotus, wheel and the stupa. These symbols are commonly used in Buddhist meditation rituals. Looking at some of these symbols will help us have a better understanding of the both Buddhist meditation and the accompanying religious practices.

The bell is one of the symbols used and it serves a natural function and is said to drive out evil spirits. It consists of a lotus symbol, dorje and a moondisc. In religious rituals, the bell is harmonized with the dorje, another symbol. The bell is used to represent the feminine principle of wisdom while the dorje represents the masculine principle of compassion.

The dorje is a symbol used in Buddha to represent its indivisible and indestructible nature. It is a scepter that is used in Buddhist meditation as part of the religious practices. It is sometimes referred to as the Vajra.

Incense burning is also taken to be a significant part of Buddhism worship. During the incense offering, this is the time to offer specific requests of success, longevity and any personal need. After this, Buddhist meditation is performed and such qualities as love, joy and compassion are reflected upon during these meditation periods.

Some religious locations are also part of Buddhism. Mount Kailash is regarded as a Buddhist temple and a significant symbol of Buddhist worship. Taken to be the central point of the universe, Mount Kailash is a Himalayan peak and is considered out of bounds to climbers. Its religious attachment extends to 4 religions. These are Buddhism, Jainism, Bon and Hinduism.

While one may interpret Buddhist art and symbols as visual mantras, contemplating on this artwork that is found in Buddhist temples and trying to understand how it is so much a part of Buddhist meditation is claimed this will build inner contact with the element being represented.

Tips on Growing Blackberries and Blackcurrants

There are several choice varieties of blackberries for compost growing. The following are some of the blackberry choice varieties for compost growing. Ashton Cross is a blackberry raised by the Long Ashton Research Station. A vigorous grower but the canes are not particularly thorny. Can be planted as close as 8 feet apart. Fruit large, deep black and attractive, with the real blackberry flavour. Season late July-Aug.

Bedford Giant is a fairly strong grower with stout canes-my favourite. Plant 12 feet apart. Fruit large, sweet and juicy, with few seeds. A deep shilling black. Season late July-Aug. Himalaya Berry is the strongest grower of all, sometimes called Himalayan Giant. Often produces fruit on the old canes, very heavy cropper. Plant 15 feet apart. Season Aug.-Sept.

John Innes is raised at the John Innes Horticultural Institution. Heavy bearer. Growth not too strong. May be planted as close as 8 feet apart. Fruits large, handsome, sweet, juicy, with few seeds. Season late Aug.-Sept. Marion is a new blackberry, being introduced from the U.S.A., with berries longer than wide. Colour bright black, flavour superior. Has cropped to 7 tons per acre.

It is impossible to over-emphasize the value of blackcurrants. They are tremendously good for one's health, and more and more people today are drinking blackcurrant juice, and rightly so, for this contains vitamin C at a ratio of 160 as compared with only 60 in the case of orange juice.

Sometimes the green capsid bugs suck the leaves, thus deforming them and splitting them and even stunting the growth. The safest way of killing this pest is to spray with liquid nicotine, dissolving a oz. in a 21 gallon can of water and adding a dessert spoonful of Stergene.

Parsley Leaved is said to be the nearest one to the common English blackberry. The leaves are deeply cut and so are most ornamental. A good variety for pergolas and trellises. Fruit is large and glossy black. Season Aug.-Sept.

Local forms have been selected for specific areas.

Indigenous to India, Malaysia and Sri Lanka, not widely cultivated but occurs wild in some areas.

Widely grown in Nigeria and other parts of West Africa; Zaire; the West Indies; and Indonesia.

White or green soko is an erect, short-lived annual herb, up to 150 cm in height. Leaves: alternate, light green, 2 cm X 6 cm; leaves on flowering shoots longer, 2 cm X 15 cm and dark green; margins at the base of the laminae recurved; some cultivars have crescent-shaped stipules in the leaf axils. Inflorescence: flowering spike pink, becoming white when seeds reach maturity. Flowers: perianth segments 5, length 6-10 mm; stamens 5 with filaments fused at the base; style 5-7 mm long and conspicuous. Seeds: small, 1 mm in diameter, biconvex, black; approximately 1000 seeds/g. Red Soko is similar in many respects to the green form, but this is generally taller, growing up to 180 cm in height, with many branches and long lateral shoots up to 150 cm long. Leaves: the young leaves, which are pink, have a prominent dark purple marking; leaves on seed-bearing plants often 28 cm X 8 cm, other leaves about 17 cm X 8 cm. Flowers: deep purple, similar to those of the green form.

Soils with a high organic content, with adequate mineral reserves are required for optimum yields although some species are tolerant to fairly wide ranges of soil condition. The optimum pH range is 5.5-7.5, but some cultivars will tolerate more alkaline conditions. Most species and cultivars have a high rate of nitrogen absorption and surface dressings of nitrogenous fertilizers are normally required during the period of active growth. In many areas, additional applications of potassium may also be necessary. Most species are tolerant of relatively high temperatures and generally thrive within a temperature range of 22-30C. Amaranthus is grown during both wet and dry seasons, though irrigation is normally required for dry season crops since the rate of transpiration by the leaves is fairly high. Frequent applications of water are required, related to the stage of growth of the crop and the moisture-retaining capacity of the soil. Lowland areas, up to 800 m, are most suitable for cultivation. Although most species and cultivars are adapted to short daylength conditions, they do not appear to be unduly sensitive to photoperiodic fluctuations.

Corms or offsetts are usually planted in prepared planting holes or pits and plants are spaced at 1-1.5 m X 1-1.5 m apart. Weeds should be controlled but little routine cultivation appears necessary.

Plants mature in 400-600 days from establishment but may remain in an edible condition for a considerable period. The basal part of the stem, which may grow to 1 m in height and 20 cm in diameter, is the main source of food, although the cormels are sometimes used. Yields of 7-12 t/ha have been reported.

Similar treatment to that described for taro or cocoyam is recommended.

The leaves and young shoots of both forms are used in soups and stews.

The compost fruit grower with his desire to produce the best fruit (organically) has often the energy and the know-how to get the maximum out of a piece of land-with the minimum of labour. The following intensive systems of apple culture have been designed with the idea of producing superior 'extra select' apples, not only high in colour but rich in sugars also. It enables a man or woman to manage not only the land but the trees as well, without having to use tall ladders either for spraying or for picking.

The result of pruning the 3rd-year lateral back hard is that a new lateral growth will be formed from the short snag the following season so as to start 'the pruning cycle' all over again.

The 'Pillar' tree, therefore, it consists of a strong upright stem carrying a definite number of 3-year laterals which have just fruited-an equal number of 2-year laterals ready to carry the crop for the following year plus an indefinite number of 1-year laterals.

Ex-Servicemen, whether young or old, will appreciate the simple drill. It is, of course, as follows: (1) Cut out all 3-year laterals to within i inch of the main stem. (2) Cut off all terminal growth at the tip of the 2-year laterals. (3) Thin out and leave unpruned a number of I-year laterals. The only decision to be made is that of determining how many 1-year laterals should be left in unpruned. A simple guide to this matter is to leave two 1-year laterals for each foot of height of the mature tree.

The lateral growths on which the crop is formed radiate direct from the central stem. These fall into three age groups according to the time they have been left growing on the central stern. There is the one-year-old lateral which has grown during the past season. This one-year-old lateral is left full length when pruning takes place, and in the following year the 'wood buds' on the lateral will develop into fruit buds over nearly its entire length. The bud at the tip, however, will usually grow out into fresh growth and possibly one or more of the buds immediately behind the tip bud will also grow out into new laterals instead of forming fruit buds. The number of buds that do this will depend on the vigour of the tree.

When the orchard is three years of age it will be grassed down, and once the grass is grown it will be kept cut regularly once a fortnight from April to October.

Tolerant to a wide range of soils with a pH of 6.0-7.0. Loose, sandy soils with a high level of organic content are preferable, although silt-clay loams are often used. Bulb size and the number of cloves formed can often be increased by additional applications of nitrogen and potash after planting. Plants are very tolerant to high temperatures up to 30C and relatively high temperatures encourage bulb development in most cultivars. Bulbs are not formed at temperatures lower than 20C. Flowers are rarely produced at high temperatures and in short-day conditions. Yields are liable to be reduced during heavy rainfall, partly due to the incidence of disease. A dry period is required for ripening of mature bulbs and drying the leaves. Most cultivars grow well at altitudes varying from sea level to 2500 m. Larger bulbs are formed in day lengths of 12 hours than of 10 hours. Although the shallot can be regarded as requiring long days for maximum bulb development, most tropical cultivars will form bulbs of an adequate size in relatively short day lengths.

Since the lower portions of the leaf sheaths are normally blanched, leeks grow best in deeply cultivated soils. Seeds are sown at almost any time of the year in containers and seedlings are transplanted when 15-20 cm high to beds or trenches 30-40 cm wide, excavated to a depth of 30-35 cm and loosely refilled to half the depth with topsoil. They are inserted into holes 7-10 cm deep made with a dibber. Plants are established in two rows 20-22 cm apart, 20-22 cm between plants in the row. If beds rather than trenches are used, the seedlings are planted in rows 30-36 cm apart, 15-20 cm between plants in the row. They will require earthing up to ensure blanching of the leaf bases. Seed required: approximately 3 kg to give a density of 300 000 plants/ha. Irrigation may be required during dry periods to maintain a relatively high soil water reserve, particularly in the shallow rooting zone extending to approximately 60 cm. In addition to a liberal supply of organic material, NPK fertilizer, applied before transplanting, is generally necessary. Subsequent band applications of nitrogen and potash may also be required on some soils.

Bulbs, which are formed in clusters of 4-8, can normally be harvested 60-100 days from planting, by which time the leaves will have become yellow, depending on the cultivar characteristics. Young bulbs, with green leaves, are also harvested for use in salads. Yield: Average bulb yields are in the region of 9-10 t/ha; if 3 crops are planted during the year, a total yield of 25-30 t/ha can be achieved. Mature bulbs which are required for propagation should be thoroughly dried and stored in well-ventilated conditions at either relatively high or low temperatures before being replanted. Seed production: Seeds are rarely used for propagation due to the variability which occurs in the seedlings produced.

The bulbs are either allowed to lie in windrows on the surface of the soil after harvesting, or are transferred to sheds or curing barns and laid on racks of wire mesh in well ventilated conditions.

The swollen, overlapping bases of the leaves are cooked; the upper portions of the leaves are rarely used.

Orchid Composts

The tropical epiphytes have evolved by growing upon the branches and trunks of trees, where their roots either hang, suspended in air, or travel along the bark, seeking out crevices and gaining access to the humus or decaying leaves in the axils of branches. In this way there is always plenty of air around the roots, hence the importance of a light, welldrained compost (growing medium).

The overhead spraying of leaves is part of damping down in the summer and whenever conditions permit. In the spring and summer, damp down the greenhouse in the morning as soon as the temperature starts to rise, and lightly spray over the foliage. This raises the humidity immediately, and you will smell the moist atmosphere that is indispensable to good orchid culture. On sunny days this humidity will have evaporated by midday, when another damping becomes necessary.

After some disastrous experiments and false starts in the very early days of orchid culture, one of the first composts (growing mediums) used was composed of hard, firm chunks of sedge peat mixed with a heavy loam or leaf mould. The mix was too dense and, since the roots could not penetrate very far through it, good root systems were not always developed. It was not until the early part of the 20th century that a better compost (growing medium) was found, and this consisted of Ostnunda fibre and sphagnum moss.

During the summer, this will be good for your orchids, but as winter approaches, together with lower temperatures, you will not want to add further humidity by damping down after midday. In winter, it is necessary to damp down the floor and between the orchids only once a day, in the morning.

Although expensive and time-consuming to prepare, this formed an ideal compost for over 50 years. One of the reasons that orchids rooted so well in it was thought to be the living moss, which formed a green growing at on the surface. However, once the rooting of orchids became fashionable, it killed the moss, causing the compost to deteriorate and decompose so a soggy state. The search was on for soniething better. Bark Compost i the necessary requirements for a new compost (growing medium) were found the bark of the American redwood cedar, although in Britain, where plantations of Corsican and Scots pine were being felled, the bark from these trees proved a good substitute.

The bark compost was much cheaper to produce and easier to handle than the old moss and fibre mixture, and today it is sold all over the world specifically for orchids. It is produced from locally felled trees and supplied through specialist nurseries and larger garden centres. It comes in graded pieces, suitable for seedlings or mature plants. It should not be confused with the bark sold by garden centres for mulching flowerbeds.

For the busy person who is away all day, it can be a great advantage to install an automatic damping system. This consists of one spray rail underneath the stagings and one above, both of which can be used independently so that you can wet either underneath the plants or the foliage as necessary.

A peat substitute will do as well, although it may need sieving to remove the finer particles. This will provide a slightly wetter mix, which can be an advantage if you cannot attend to your orchids as often as you would like. To this basic mix you can add a small percentage of charcoal, which will ensure that the compost stays "sweet" and does not become soured. Use only granulated horticultural charcoal as supplied by specialist nurseries or garden centres. This is not the same as barbecue charcoal, which has been treated to burn slowly and is unsuitable for orchids.

Perpetual or `Remontant' Strawberries

Those who have been fascinated by the bowls of Alpine strawberries offered to them on the Continent may like to grow their own.

They can be planted in rows 18 inches apart, leaving a foot between the plants. The fruits, of course, are small and the propagation can be done by splitting up the clumps after fruiting has finished in the late autumn. Fifty plants are ample for a normal family. This is a strawberry which. will grow on a partially shaded border which has been enriched with plenty of fine old compost or, if preferred, sedge peat. It is possible to raise plants from seed or to buy them from nurserymen early in September. Pick off the first few flowers that appear and the plants will then. crop heavily from August to October, when the ordinary varieties are over.

Baron Solemacher is perhaps the best variety. Easy to grow and a heavy cropper.

Hampshire Maid if deblossomed in May and June will produce fruits from July until November. The plant is compact, the trusses appear all round and the fruit is found at the edge of the foliage. The fruit is rounded-conical, firm and dark red. It is suitable for jam. It certainly is a very heavy cropper.

Charles Sinnen is not an easy variety to get hold of because it does not produce any runners and must be propagated in November by divisions of crowns. It is included because it is considered to be the most delicious remontant. Red Rich came from the U.S.A. and is now offered by one or two British nurserymen. It is an easy-to-grow kind with dark red juicy berries and dark green leaves. it is a strong grower and a heavy cropper and will produce runners.

Some choice varieties for compost growing of strawberries are Cambridge Favorite. The Hartley Mauditt strain of this variety is outstanding. Captain A. W. S. Agar, V.C., who supplies this variety, sends the plants to growers on or about August 22nd. A very heavy cropper. Fruit very large, conical and salmon scarlet. The plants arc compact, the runners have strong crowns and make rapid growth. An excellent variety for ganwicks and cloches. Season second early; Cambridge Late Pine. A strong-growing variety which because it flowers late is very resistant to frost and mildew. Produces large, round, conical, crimson fruits of excellent sweet flavour. First class for bottling and canning. Season late; Cambridge Prizewinner. Plants are tall with spreading foliage. The berries are light scarlet in colour but they are nice and firm. The first fruits are large and conical, the later ones smaller and more rounded unless the plants are properly fed and mulched, when the size keeps up. Loves being given a little extra potash in the form of wood ashes. Season early.

Tips on Orchid Pests

Slugs and snails are troublesome pests are always with us and can only be kept at bay by constant vigilance. They are likely to be most often encountered in a greenhouse, where conditions are ideal for their survival. The smaller garlic snails can do considerable harm by eating through root tips. The larger varieties, and all sizes of slugs, will eat roots and chew into new growths and developing pseudo bulbs, often causing a great problem in a single night. Search for these pests after dark with a torch, and you will find them hiding in the sheaths of flower spikes.

The bees will enter a greenhouse from outside, removing pollen as they leave the flowers where they have searched unsuccessfully for nectar. Prevent bees from entering your greenhouse by covering the ventilator space with a fine-gauge netting. Remember to do the same to the doorway if this is left open during hot weather. Mice find orchid pollen particularly attractive as a good source of food. If you suspect you have mice, which will come in from outside as the weather gets cold in winter, lay humane traps and be sure to release them well away from the greenhouse.

These mites are most active in warm weather and breed fastest in warm, dry conditions. They get on to plants indoors as well as outdoors. In bad cases, they will cause premature foliage loss. You can do much to avoid getting red spider mite on your orchids by regularly spraying the foliage on the undersides as well on top with water. Cymbidiums summering outdoors, for example, can be hosed daily underneath and between the leaves. Another method of control is to use a systemic insecticide, but take care to read the manufacturers' instructions regarding its safe use. The insecticide will render a plant poisonous and eradicate not only the adult mites but also the new generations that will hatch about ten days later. Alternatively, use an insecticidal soap, wiping e leaf in turn. This is a contact killer I will destroy adults but may leave unharmed, so repeat after ten days.

The damage caused is similar to that done by scale insects, showing up as ugly yellow patches where they settle. Treat this pest in the same way as scale insects.

Weevils and caterpillars are leaf-chewing pests will eat large chunks from leaves and flowers in a short time. The weevils are nocturnal, spending their days buried in the compost (growing medium), which makes them particularly difficult to catch. Their grubs also inhabit the compost and harm root tips. Search for these at night while you are looking for slugs. Occasionally, they will be seen by day, as are various kinds of caterpillar.

Watering the plant with a solution of insecticidal soap or BT (Bacillus thuringiensis) will kill the grubs. Weevils are a common outdoor pest of gardens and will find their way into the greenhouse and home. They may also be brought in on other plants, and should be constantly watched for.

Woodlice, ants and earwigs are pests that inhabit cool, damp, shady places, and under the staging in a greenhouse is the ideal home for woodlice. Here they will burrow into the compost (growing medium), breaking it down prematurely and causing it to clog.

Once the visible culprits have been dealt with, treat the plants with systemic insecticide on a regular basis until you can be sure that successive generations have been killed. Scale insects are more active in the spring and summer, but in a warm greenhouse will continue to breed throughout the winter. They sometimes excrete a honeydew, which in turn will attract ants to "milk" them, in the same way as they do aphids. This honeydew will grow sooty molds, which can further disfigure the leaf.

Sowing Orchid Seeds

All living things, both animal and vegetable, are made up of cells that divide as the organism grows. Life starts with a single cell, in the middle of which is a nucleus containing the chromosomes. Each chromosome carries the genes of life. As the cells are the building blocks, so the genes are the blueprint of life.

From the moment of conception, when the pollen fertilizes a seed, the characteristics of that potential plant and the colour of its flowers have all been determined by the genes.

Very occasionally, a plant will occur naturally with twice the number of chromosomes. This is a tetraploid, or 4N. Tetraploids are more likely to occur in hybridizing, and when crossed with a diploid the result is a triploid, or 3N. It is also possible to create 5N and 6N hybrids, and so on.

In the wild, the pollination of orchids is mostly carried out by insects and occasionally hummingbird produce large quantities of blooms, all opening at the same time, to ensure successful cross-pollination within the species. Each seed capsule contains hundreds of thousands of minute seeds. It requires only a few of these to germinate for the species to be perpetuated and the cycle of life to continue. The best results for vigorous seedling growth are obtained from the cross-pollination of two separate clones, although many orchids are self-fertile, whereby the same pollen can be used on the one flower.

However, there is a conservation movement now experimenting with long-term deep-freezing, whereby the seed is dried and kept at extremely low temperatures.

Every amateur who tries their hand at hybridizing will be quite successful at crossing two related plants, but the serious breeder will take the time and trouble to study the chromosome counts. These can usually be determined usual examination of the plant, its raents and the size and shape of the litooms. However, the only scientific way is to take root-tip samples.

These are wed into micro-thin slivers and placed on a microscope slide, where a suitable state of division can be found and the chromosomes counted.

Orchids with uneven numbers of Chromosomes will not breed. These can often be converted by treating at a very eirly stage with Colchicine, an extract iom the crocus. This will react by dunging the chromosome count in both seed- and tissue-cultured plants. This technique requires some laborawry experience in handling such very szriall amounts of plant material.

Field Maple and Box Elder

The sycamore is the most important European species of the genus Acer. It is a tree of western, central and southern Europe, its northward distribution falling short of the Baltic Sea, but it is much planted elsewhere and now naturalized as far north as 'the Shetland Islands and southern Scandinavia.

It generally grows to a height of no more than 7 to 15 metres. Only in riverinc woods or rich soil does it attain a height of more than 15 metres. The bark is furrowed into rhombic plates and the variety suberosa has corky wings on the twigs. The leaf stalk exudes a milky substance when broken off. The yellow-green flowers appear at the beginning of May, together with the leaves. The fruit, a wide double samara with parallel wings, ripens in September and October.

The sycamore has a large, spreading root system, but does not produce many stump sprouts. The hard, light-coloured wood is used to make furniture, veneers and musical instruments. The decorative wood with a curly pattern is highly prized. During the Napoleonic Wars attempts were made to produce sugar from the sap of the European maples.

The Norway maple is more resistant to frost than the sycamore, and in Sweden is found as far north as latitude 64, its distribution extending deep into areas with inland climate all the way to the Urals. It is a tree of lower and submontane elevations, and in Europe it is found at altitudes up to about 700 metres, growing mostly on rocky locations alongside streams, or on rocky slopes.

The twigs are green, covered with a bluish bloom when young. The trunk is often crooked, and the bark is divided into ridges by shallow fissures. Unlike all other European maples, it has compound odd-pinnate leaves. The tiny greenish flowers are clustered in pendent racemes and appear as the leaves unfold. The fruit, which matures in autumn, appears also in pendent clusters.

The shoots are thick, and have large leaf scars below the buds. The odd-pinnate leaves are very ornamental, and the inconspicuous yellow-green flowers, arranged in panicles, are usually borne dioeciously. The winged fruit is capable of travelling great distances. The tree of heaven is an important ornamental for city parks and avenues.

Centre of origin and distribution is possibly Malaysia or Indonesia as it was being introduced into the Pacific Islands at an early date. Now widely distributed throughout Southeast Asia.

The Cocoyam is now widely distributed throughout the tropics and is grown commercially in Egypt. It has become an important food crop in the West Indies and Hawaii where many forms and varieties are widely cultivated. In West Africa, Cocoyams have a wider range of tolerance to the climate than species of Dioscorea and the crop is grown on an appreciable scale in southern and eastern Nigeria, Ghana and other West African countries.

Fertile, deep alluvial soils are required for optimum development; slightly acid conditions are preferable and heavy clay soils should be avoided. Good drainage is essential since the crop is sensitive to waterlogging. Liberal dressings of organic material, as well as moderate applications of nitrogen, phosphate and potash are recommended. A temperature range of 25-35 Celsius is required, without significant fluctuation. An evenly distributed rainfall of 1000-1500 mm is considered suitable for non- irrigated crops but corm development is promoted during dry periods. Most production occurs at altitudes below 1000 in.

Adapted to growing on a wide range of soil type in moist, shady situations, sometimes in swamps, and will tolerate brackish conditions. Areas of high rainfall and humidity are most suitable for the production of high yields.

Propagation is by corms or sections of corms, each weighing 50-140 g, planted during the wet season after they have begun sprouting. In some areas, corms and cormels are planted together, but they may also be planted separately. In the Pacific area, the top portion of the main corm is used for propagation and this method is claimed to give higher yields. In the Philippines, where Taro is grown on a commercial scale, the lowland forms are planted in rice paddies prepared in much the same way as they are for rice. The sprouted corms of vigorous cultivars are planted in rows 120 cm apart, with 60 cm between plants; less vigorous cultivars are established with 90 cm between rows and 45 cm between plants in the row.

Mature corms may reach a length of more than 1 m, with a diameter of 60 cm, and are normally harvested after 3 years of growth. A fully developed corm may weigh 40-80 kg; yields of 10 t/ha have been recorded.

For the fresh market the corms are normally washed and the roots and fibres discarded; the outer leaves may also be removed. They are generally graded before being packed in crates for transit. For storage, the corms are cleaned but not washed; they may also be cured.

The mature corms provide a staple carbohydrate food in many Pacific Islands and are normally roasted, steamed or boiled. They may also be peeled, sliced and scalded before being sun dried. The leaves and inflorescence are also used as a cooked vegetable.

Woody plants absorb more water than they can use to obtain the necessary amount of mineral substances contained in it; the excess is eliminated by the process known as transpiration. This takes place in the leaves and consists of the evaporation of water, regulated to a certain degree by a system of pores that can be opened or closed.

Atmospheric carbon dioxide is the tree's main source of food. Together with water and by the means of chlorophyll and radiant energy from the sun it is processed by the leaf cells into organic compounds that go into building the major part of the tree's organs. This process is known as photosynthesis.

Because the amount of carbon dioxide in the air is very low (0.03 per cent on average), the tree has to process great quantities of air. This must take place on the greatest possible leaf surface, which is why the leaves of woody plants are so thin, and why a mature tree has tens or hundreds of thousands of them.

The rate of transpiration of broad-leaved trees is several times greater than that of conifers. The poplar, aspen, alder, birch and ash have a particularly high rate.

In comparison with non-woody plants they have the great advantage of height and longevity. Before man introduced intensive land cultivation most of the Earth's surface was covered with forests. Even today the forest would soon reclaim the land, should man cease to tend and cultivate it. This is borne out not only by examples in tropical Africa and southeast Asia, but also by all the lands in Europe that have been left lying fallow.

In some species with large leaves the leaflets are divided even further and these are called bipinnately compound leaves, e.g. the honey locust or Kentucky coffee-tree.

The birch is a tree of the northern hemisphere and its several species arc distributed throughout Europe, America and Asia. Most common on the Continent is the silver birch growing in the wild from Italy to the Balkan Peninsula, northwards beyond the Arctic Circle and eastwards far into Siberia. In central Europe it is plentiful from lowland to foothill elevations.

The grey alder is a light-demanding, fast growing tree that is very tolerant and grows well on poorer soils. In central Europe, it is a colonist of alluvial land alongside mountain brooks and streams, occurring at elevations up to 1500 metres. However, it does not require moist soil, and is a colonist of screes and shallow stony slopes. It is sometimes used for afforestation on non-fertile soils which it enriches by means of its nitrogen- fixing nodules. The wood resembles that of the common alder, but is somewhat paler and of little value.

The hard, tough and flexible wood is used for interior woodwork, for wheels and also as fuel. The sap is used by the cosmetic industry, and the bark for dressing skins.

The bark is smooth and greenish-grey, even in old trees. The buds, unlike those of the beech, are 10 mm long at the most, and pressed close to the twig. The leaves are alternate. The male and female catkins appear in May after the leaves, the fruit matures in late September. The seed does not germinate till the spring of the second year after sowing. The hornbeam is a prolific seeder and is marked by vigorous, natural regeneration.

A shade-loving tree, it makes moderate demands on soil fertility and moisture. It has a shallow, widespreading root system and is marked by the production of stump sprouts when cut back.

The nuts, which are very tasty, are used by confectioners and also eaten roasted. The tree requires a mild climate and adequate moisture for good growth and a good nut harvest. It is sensitive to late spring and early autumn frosts, is intolerant of lime, and under forest conditions does well even in moderate shade. The high quality, durable wood is used to make furniture, barrels, fencing and also provides tannin.

Having set up your greenhouse with the correct equipment and prepared it for orchids, use the central staging for the largest plants that need the most headroom. Above these, along the ridge board and elsewhere, suspend orchids, such as vandas and stanhopeas, that like to grow in hanging baskets. These can be attached by the clips that are supplied with aluminium greenhouses, or you can hang them from hooks in timber rafters.

Bear in mind that these plants will have to be taken down for watering to prevent too much surplus water from splashing on to the plants below.

In summer, the same heater can be used as a cooling fan to circulate cool air and reduce the temperature. Other forms of heater, such as paraffin- and gas-burning heaters, which are available for greenhouses, are only suitable for orchids if used with care. They emit ethylene fumes which can cause bud-drop and other problems.

Insulating the Greenhouse In winter, save as much heat as possible by insulating the inside of the greenhouse with double-glazing, using polythene (plastic) sheeting or panels on the sides and roof. This should be installed a few inches from the glass, in order to create a layer of still air in between, and should form a complete seal.

Creating the right conditions for the orchids is a combination of providing humidity, warmth and fresh air. These three important factors must always balance each other, so that the atmosphere always feels right when you enter the greenhouse.

When insufficient ventilation is given, the air can become stagnant, encouraging the growth of moulds and rots. This can be prevented by opening one ventilator for a short period during the middle of the day. Some greenhouses are equipped with a ventilator on both sides of the roof. This creates more opportunities for opening the ventilators, and on windy days you can open the ventilator on the leeward side to the wind. Bottom ventilators, sited on both sides of the greenhouse, just above ground level, are ideal for creating a natural current of air from the bottom to the top. This current of air creates a natural cooling breeze through the orchids.

You will need to visit your greenhouse two or three times a day, if possible, to check that the temperature and humidity are right. A visit first thing in the morning is a joy. This is the time when those fragrant orchids in bloom give off the strongest perfume; the scent of their flowers in the moist morning air is one of the delights of orchid growing.

The fan will pull the hot air out of the greenhouse but it will also reduce the humidity and moisture, so it becomes necessary to install a misting system fitted below bench level to keep the floor permanently moist. Fresh air entering the bottom ventilators will collect moisture, which is carried through the orchids before being expelled at ridge level by the extractor fan. An alternative is to install a small electric circulating fan. This is different from the extractor fan, and only moves air around the greenhouse, freshening it up and keeping it buoyant, to prevent spotting on flowers, which can occur when the air is still and the humidity builds up. These fans can be a nuisance when you enter the greenhouse because you feel as if you are standing in a draught. A pull switch by the door solves this problem, allowing you to turn the fan on and off when entering and leaving the greenhouse.

Wild Pear and Crab Apple

The wild pear is one of the species that have given rise to the many garden varieties cultivated for their sweet, succulent fruit. It is a native of southern, central and western Europe, but, since ancient times, has been cultivated in the vicinity of human habitations.

The wild service tree reaches a height of 20 to 25 metres and because it may live 200 to 300 years, one may come across the occasional, robust specimen with a vast broad crown. The bark is furrowed in squares, the buds are spherical, lustrous yellow-green. The leaves may take on red tints in autumn. The white flowers are borne in erect panicles 6 to 8 centimetres across. The brown fruits are edible following the first frost.

The mountain ash, and its several cultivated varieties, is also popular for planting alongside roads as an ornamental for its spring flowers and bright autumn coloration. The wood has little durability.

The whitebeam is widespread in southern, central and western Europe, including Great Britain, the southern tip of Sweden marking the northernmost limit of its range. Throughout this area, however, it occurs fairly sparsely. A light-demanding and warmth-loving species, it is often found growing on chalk or limestone hills facing south. In such conditions, it may be found at elevations even over 1000 metres.

Unlike the mountain ash, the reddish brown bark is longitudinally fissured, even in the young tree. The leaves, odd-pinnate, and grey-downy beneath until midsummer, appear about 14 clays later than in the mountain ash. The service tree begins to bear flowers and fruit at the age of 25 to 35 years, sometimes sooner.

The flowers, white, sometimes tinged with pink, are larger than those of the mountain ash and the fruits are reddish-yellow and pear-shaped. At one time, the service tree was grown in gardens and orchards, but today its fruits are eaten only by birds and animals. In warmer climates, it is used as an ornamental and planted alongside roads and in parks. The timber, with red-brown heartwood, is very hard, and is used to make wheels and in joinery.

Swiss mountain pine has two different forms - the tree form growing to heights of 10 to 20 metres, and the shrub form, 2 to 4 metres high, called the mountain dwarf pine. The Swiss mountain pine, as its name implies, grows mainly high up in the mountains above the tree line; it is also found in the foothills in peat-bogs. The tree form predominates in the western Alps, Vosges and Pyrenees, the shrub form is more abundant in the eastern Alps and Carpathians.

Its leaves greatly resemble those of the Scots pine but are arranged more densely on the twig. The tree form differs from the Scots pine in having grey-black, furrowed bark, which goes all the way up to the crown, and asymmetric cones with knoblike, red-brown scale tips. In the shrub form the cones are symmetrical; broadly opened, with red-brown scale tips.

The Swiss mountain pine is a sun-loving tree that thrives in poorer, shallower soils. Its chief importance is as protection against avalanches and soil erosion. The decumbent form is very popular as an ornamental tree.

The jack pine reaches a height of only about 20 to 25 metres and has a relatively short life span, about a hundred years. It forms two whorls of branches each year. It differs from the Scots pine in having short, pale-green needles, black bark with scaly ridges extending up to the crown, and small, strongly incurved cones.

These remain on the tree for many years and open only if high heat is applied, often not until after a forest fire. This fact, as well as its ability to thrive in poor soils, is why it so rapidly seeds and covers large areas destroyed by fire.

In Europe the jack pine can be recommended only as a short-term pioneer tree in extremely poor and degraded soils, in dry areas, to improve and prepare the soil for more demanding trees.

Of course, it is necessary to see that the barrel is standing on some bricks before the soil is put in, so as to allow good drainage, and to ensure that the hoops are good. During the summer plenty of water will have to be given if the plants are going to be able to crop heavily. It may be necessary, by the way, to give some extra support to the top of the barrel by using a strong length of wire and twisting it round tightly.

Tartarian Maple and Horse Chestnut

The silver lime is a native of south-eastern Europe, where it occurs in the Balkan Peninsula and as far cast as the southern Ukraine. It is found in oak forests, and frequently on limestone hills. It has moderate requirements of soil properties and moisture, and has done very well in the parks and streets of western and central European cities; it has also proved to be far more tolerant of the dry and smoky atmosphere of the cities than the local species of lime.

The silver lime grows to a height of 25 to 30 metres, and develops a large, ovoid crown with dense foliage. The dark grey bark is smooth, even in older trees. The twigs and buds are slightly hairy and the leaves are covered with silvery-grey hairs below. The pale, yellow-green flowers appear a few clays later than those of the small-leaved lime and are even more fragrant. The fruit is a rounded, downy capsule. Unlike the other European lime trees, the silver lime retains its thick green foliage until late autumn, when the leaves turn yellow. It is an attractive ornamental and often planted in parks and avenues.

The Tartarian maple is very tolerant of dry situations, and is plentiful even in the Russian steppes. In parks, it is planted on dry slopes, and as tall green hedges in dry locations. It is also very attractive as a solitary specimen tree. The related Manchurian maple (Acer ginnala Maxim.), a native of the Far East, is frequently cultivated. It, too, has the shape of a shrub, but differs from the Tartarian maple in having distinctive three-lobed leaves which turn yellow or bright red in autumn.

The horse-chestnut is one of the most attractive of trees when in flower. It is a native of western Asia and south-eastern Europe, where it occurs in broad-leaved forests in the mountains at elevations of 700 to 1200 metres. It was introduced into other parts of Europe as early as 1576, and was widely planted in parks and avenues, as well as in game preserves as food for forest animals. The horse- chestnut grows to a height of 25 metres and develops a dense, broadly ovoid crown. The trunk is often twisted, always in the right-hand direction, and the bark peels in thin plates.

The common ash reaches a height of 30 to 35 metres or more under forest conditions, and develops a slender, straight bole with high set crown. It is sensitive to late spring frosts and, when the terminal shoot is damaged, often develops twin stems.

The horse-chestnut thrives best in rich, moist soil, but is tolerant of poor light and pollution. In severe winters it can be slightly damaged by frost. The wood is not considered of much value.

Well-drained barns, with a high level of organic material are generally suitable. Seeds are sown in containers or in a seedbed and the seedlings are transplanted, when 15-20 cm in height, to prepared beds with rows 24-30 cm apart, plants 15-20 cm apart in the row, or in square planting at 20 cm X 20 cm. Seed requirement: 4 kg/ha to give a density of 300 000 plants/ha.

An erect herb, biennial, normally grown as an annual, up to 60 cm in height. Roots; adventitious. Bulbs: with condensed flattened stem, enclosed by papery scale leaves; bulb separated into small separate bulbs or cloves formed from axillary buds, each with outer protective sheathing scales; single cloves consist of a thickened storage leaf sheath and a central bud. Leaves: blades, linear, flattened, solid, up to 2.5 cm across. Flowers: in umbels, borne on smooth, round, solid scape; variable in number, on slender pedicels; perinatal approximately 4 mm in length, pink. Seeds are rarely produced.

Many local and commercial cultivars are grown in tropical Asia, including both tall and short leaved forms. Tropical Asia, possibly China, where several related wild species of Allium occur.

The cloves are separated into single segments, normally referred to as 'rounds'. Pests and Diseases of Blackcurrants

Aphides will pucker and curl the leaves and cause the tips to be twisted. Spraying with a 5 per cent emulsion of a tar-oil wash in December kills the eggs.

Capsid bugs puncture the leaves and shoots, causing the former to be spotted and the latter to be injured. In cases of very bad attack, the top leaves turn a yellowish hue. Prevent this trouble by spraying in February with a D.N.C. and omit the tar oil this season.

Fortunately with black currants it doesn't matter at all about cutting to just above a bud, for there seem to be pin buds which will break out into good growth on almost any part of the old wood. By the way-don't ever summer prune blackcurrants.

It is better not to cultivate in between blackcurrant bushes. I had tried grassing down in contrast to strawing. The disadvantage of this system is that the grass has to be cut fourteen or fifteen times during the summer and autumn and this makes extra work.

The conventional distances are 5 feet by 5 feet, but under the straw mulch method I get the best results with having the rows 6 feet apart and the bushes only 3 feet apart in the rows. Eventually blackcurrant hedges are formed, and this helps the pollinating insects greatly, for they are able to move from bush to bush right up a row.

These insects hate having to fly from bush to bush when they are planted at distances of 5 to 6 feet, and, in fact, they will not do so in windy weather. The `hedge' method, therefore, encourages better fertilization and thus heavier yields.

Potting on Orchid Seedlings

As a general guide, apply feed added to the water at every second or third watering. By using plain water in between the feeds, any leftover chemicals in the compost (growing medium) will be washed through, avoiding the build-up of any residue. Feed very sparingly during the winter and more liberally in summer, when there is better light and higher temperatures to balance the extra nutrients being supplied.

Repot these plants again the following spring and annually until they reach flowering size in another two to four years. When the first of your seedlings flower, provided that it is a new cross not previously named, you can register the hybrid with a name of your choice assuming that it has not been previously used by someone else.

During the first half of the 20th century, orchid culture progressed little. Thousands of new hybrids were raised, with seedlings taking up to seven or eight years to flower. The same orchids today can be flowered within three to four years. There can be no doubt that feeding orchids can greatly benefit their performance, but this has to be done with care.

Orchids are perennial plants, with a life span of many years. Their rate of growth is slow, and any artificial feeding has to reflect this. The extra nutrients are given not to increase the rate at which orchids grow or to influence their growing cycle, but to maintain a steady momentum and to ensure health and vigor. The first growers to experiment with feeding orchids were those employed by the private estates, whose owners had the best collections at that time.

They used what was at hand, and this happened to be dried animal droppings. This was rubbed through a sieve and mixed with compost (growing medium). This proved very successful with the deciduous calanthes, which have a short, fast growing season.
